Elphaba arrived at the salon maybe five minutes after it had closed, having managed to leave the library early. She had a bottle of wine in one hand, which she lifted up in order to draw Daniela’s attention to it once the other woman saw her.

“I heard a rumour that we should be celebrating today.”

This had not been her idea. 

She had wanted to be anywhere that wasn’t Pittsburgh after what had happened; anywhere she wouldn’t be reminded of it all, where she’d be granted some reprieve from everyone’s sympathy and concern. Her escape route had been suggested by Karen, her former college roommate and the woman who would have been her maid of honour, had everything gone to plan. She’d flown in for the wedding, and stayed longer than she should have done to try and help Rita pick up the pieces when it all went wrong. When the time had come for her to leave, she’d presented her with a plane ticket and a suitcase she’d already packed for her.

In the fortnight since then, she’d mostly been hiding out in Karen’s tiny apartment while the other woman had been working, only really going out when she’d insisted they do something together. It was jarring, to have her plans altered so drastically on the day that she’d always been told, ever since she was a child, was supposed to be the happiest of her life. 

Karen had, of course, decided to take matters into her own hands. Rita had never been one to wallow, never been the sort of person to hide away with her sadness and anger, and her friend wasn’t about to let that change - especially not because of this. That morning, she’d woken Rita with coffee as she’d been getting ready for work, informing the other woman in a tone which left no room for argument that she’d made an appointment for her at the salon a couple of blocks away. 

Rita had at least been able to ask for an explanation even if she’d known there was no point arguing with her, and she’d had to smile at the response she’d got. It was the classic thing, right? Pampering yourself when everything seemed just that little bit bleaker than it was meant to be. And besides, Karen had assured her, after an afternoon at Daniela’s it would be impossible for Rita to feel quite so sad.

So no, this had not been her idea on any level - not coming to New York in the first place, nor coming to the salon. But still, she mustered a smile as she pushed open the door, gaze falling on a woman who matched the description she’d been given almost instantly.

“Hi, I... Apparently have an appointment at twelve?”
