Tuesday, October 29: Overkill, "Rotten to the Core"

“Rotten to the Core” was one of two tracks Overkill re-recorded for Feel the Fire, and while it didn’t sound any different from the original EP version, it was a worthwhile inclusion for their first full-length as it aptly summed up the band’s whole deal at the time. The track was hard, mean and fast without fully crossing over to thrash, which Overkill didn’t really slot into at the time anyway- much like semi-local colleagues Anthrax (and most of the Big 4, for that matter), the band started out as a more amped-up traditional heavy metal act that eventually gave way to thrash, and this tune presented the seeds of that transition. Blitz’s snarling yelp hadn’t fully developed yet, so he mostly sounded moderately annoyed, while Bobby Gustafson’s riffing was equal parts Hetfield and Tipton/Downing and Rat Skates was similarly largely indebted to Judas Priest, though there were traces of Accept-like near-thrash. Mostly, “Rotten to the Core” was a fun banger that sat at the midpoint between major metal movements, and in many ways presented Overkill at their early best.
