Thank you @ramble84 for finding and sharing this❤️
Idk if you feel the same way as me, but I feel suddenly very unwelcome in this fandom with the blind excitment for De Oost and the lack of understanding of how problematic it could be. The anti-Asian racism in this fandom is surprising, unexpected, astounding, but overall, disappointing.
oh anon, i am sorry ❤️ you’re not alone in feeling alienated right now. to be honest i’ve been kind of dreading this movie since december. and to be honest, i wasn’t sure i wanted to answer this ask because i really, really don’t want to start any kind of discourse around this. but i do want to acknowledge the feelings we’re both having.
to be clear, i don’t think anyone in this fandom has bad intentions. i also don’t think this movie is going to be inherently ~problematic~. i am worried about is the potential for this movie to get (for lack of a better term) the fandom treatment? because i don’t know if people realize this, but the character marwan plays is a real life person who was a war criminal. i genuinely am not sure how many people knew that so i wanted to put it out there and hope it informs how people choose to interact with this movie.
i think jim taihuttu does good work, and i’m sure marwan’s portrayal will be complex and powerful and i’m sure he’s aware of the weight that comes with that kind of role. but i had a really visceral reaction to the teaser when it came out in december, and i haven’t watched the new one. and i uh....really don’t want to watch marwan play a character who commits atrocities against people who look like my family. i personally am not in a place to watch that right now, or possibly ever.
i realize everyone does not share this experience! and i don’t think this is like, a Bad Movie. i want more people to understand what colonial powers did to southeast asia. i’m totally not opposed to other people watching this move. but i guess this is a plea to...please be thoughtful with what you’re putting out there? and please tag? and please understand why some of us (SOME! i am not at ALL claiming to speak for all asian or southeast asian people! some people might not have this reaction at all!) might unfollow/block people who are interacting with this movie in ways that we find hurtful. all my fandom™️ advice boils down to: don’t be a dick, and that’s where i’m landing here too.

Just when their guests look like are trying to make an excuse to be somewhere else, Nicky leans over and kisses Joe casually on the lips, just a few seconds and almost chaste. Then he leans back and smiles at them.
Joe smiles too. Then he kisses Nicky, deeper, lush, with tongue.
Westerling chuckles and takes another swig of his whiskey while Miranda lights another cigar and leans back on the mounds of pillow, legs spreading wider. He starts clapping, slowly, in appreciation or mockery, Joe and Nicky can’t really tell. Perhaps for him, they're the same.
“Youssef, Nicholas, you both could have saved so much money and expensive wine had you been upfront with your motive for inviting us up here,” Miranda says, eyes dancing with something close to hunger.
“Oh, and what motive is that?” Joe says, coy.
Miranda huffs, his free hand inching closer to the front of his trousers.
“How long have you two been together?” Westerling asks.
“Oh,” Nicky says. “Forever.”

Or, that time in 1958 when Nicky and Joe work in tandem as honeypot. It is not really enjoyable for either of them, but they hope it's worth the effort.
