Dear person I lov(ed),
Your eyes were always
full of love—
two candles shining bright
in endless dark.
I was nine the last time I saw you,
faced with a choice:
you or my mother.
My childlike heart
made the wrong choice—
it chose my mother,
a ghost
who was never truly there.
So the years slipped by,
years full of shadows,
your eyes growing distant,
far away.
Then came the message—
two years after your heart
had already stopped singing,
because I’m always the one
no one tells.
I asked about you,
often—
but never again will I have
the chance
to say everything
that slumbers deep inside my soul.
I never told you
how much I love you,
how much I miss you,
how much I regret.
I never told you
how much I cherished you—
your gestures,
your words,
your gifts.
Everything I remember of you
is drowned in gray—
my memories like
a black-and-white film.
I stood at your grave—
no name,
no flowers.
I laid roses there,
but do you even like them?
I don’t believe in heaven,
in life beyond this—
yet my eyes always turn upward,
searching for you.
Still, I send this letter
rising like a prayer—
in hope of forgiveness.
I whisper to the stars,
light candles in the dark.
I see your face
in every sweet you brought me,
in every flickering candle,
in every October night,
in every glance
towards the endless sky.
Can you forgive me?
Because I cannot.
But I know one thing—
I love you.
