I got a new opossum skull in the woods :D

This is a big boy, the size of a gray fox.

Found this op.ossum a few feet off the road while walking my d.ogs with my mom, he seemed pretty fresh and in good shape so I decided to come back for him after the walk.

He had already started to stiffen up, but he didn't stink and was still warm. He was in one whole piece too, no torn skin or noticeable injuries besides some bleeding from his mouth and nose. Bagged him up and took him home to bury him and let him decompose for the next several months.

This was my first time picking up a dead animal I just randomly found and taking it home to bury like this. Was a bit nerve wracking, but im also sort of proud and excited. I put him in the box in the hopes to help keep him in one place, but left it open and cut a couple holes in the sides so he'll hopefully still decompose just fine. Put a brick directly over his temporary grave so I remembered where to dig, covered the grave to discourage animals from getting at him, and left him. I'll probably check back sometime in April or May just to see how far along he's come but I don't expect to be able to start the degreasing and "bleaching" process until sometime in the summer.

How long does it take to thaw a oppossum?

So I've had a oppossum in my freezer for a few months now and I decided I'd try to skin him today. Its been about 2-3 hours and the only part that's thawed is his tail... Ive only had squirrels that ive frozen before so I've never had to thaw something this big. Should I put it in the fridge for a couple days?

I went to the forest yesterday and found some cool stuff

A piece of boar skull (I think), remains of a domestic pigeon (just feathers), a coral orchid, some laurel and best of all a dead possum which of course came home with me, not sure but there could be articulation In his future

I was also lucky enough to see a little western screech owl (Megascops kennicottii) but I couldn't get a picture of it because the neighbor's free-living dog scared it and fly away :(

Guys, today I finally found a dead opossum with a skull (apparently) without fractures

It's cool, it's not the big adult opossum I want, but being a young adult it's a lot better than a newly emancipated cub

I came across her by chance while passing near an empty lot near my brother's school

I had to accompany him to some business at his school because of the virtual classes and on the way back I saw a vulture on the ground and I thought "vultures don't go down to the ground for no reason, there must be something there" and indeed, there was the crumbled corpse of a opossum, I suspect it was the victim of a stray dog (there are some in the area :/) but ok

So, seeing that his skull was apparently not crushed, I took a bag and twisted his neck to separate it from the body, once the vertebrae were separated I took my knife to cut all the connective tissue

Once I managed to separate it, I put it in another extra bag and put it in my backpack

Something funny is that for some reason the public transport route that I use to get to my house was not working so we took a taxi and during the whole trip home there was suddenly a slight smell of death from my backpack

I'm not sure if the taxi driver noticed (although I don't really care) but the whole way since it started to pass, it went like this:

No puede ser = Can not be

Anyway, a few hours after I got home I started to peel that head and when I took it out of the bag the heat and the confinement had accelerated the decomposition TOO MUCH and it stank like hell

I even had to wear a mask because that really really smelled bad

So ... Now the head is macerating and I can't wait to put that skuzzle together

Btw, I realize that I should have also brought the tail and maybe one or some of its legs, but good heavens, it was sooo hot that I just wanted to decapitate that thing and get out of there, besides, that place is totally infested of red ants and I did not feel like being bitten so I just grabbed the head and got out as soon as I could

The stupid stray dogs on my street killed another poor baby opossum

She is so small and cute, it is a real pity

Tomorrow I will take a photo and see what I do with it because it is so small that I don't know how to process it

Maybe just put it in a plastic bag or container with holes to attract beetles and let them take care of it even though it smells so bad that it is probably full of maggots
