I talked this once with my friends
Scout isnt pushing back, reaffirming that his father is dead because he cannot accept the truth, he is pushing back on it because he opened up about his life, he got vulnerable, amd got told back something that feels like a joke.
I think its important that this happens with Heavy, Scout just got back from a whole trip to get Heavy back on the team, he met his damn family, his sisters and mother and life history, Heavy, to Scout knowledge, is one of the few that also grew up without a father during most of his life and had to adapt to that
And its not like Scout grew up with this hurting him, truly, he had 7 older brothers, he had far all the knowledge of any of them to learn; all the supposed things he is 'traditionally learnt by a father' were easily met by his, i repeat myself, brothers who were easily twice his age, even possible older.
A lot of what feels lost in certain readings is thr familiarity of what a huge family with a huge age difference in it is like, im fairly certain Scout could've grown up with nephews his almost same age
So to Scout, who, outside of talking to his mother in douple or triple jump voice-lines in game, doesmt speak about his family (he has never spoken of any of hsi brothers!!) To just, TELL Heavy about his dad being absent.
And be met with what feels like a quip, a joke, to never be taken seriously, to be shown, to his face, that he doesnt deserve to speak about his vulnerabilitues like this.
And that isnt the intent of Heavy, for it to hurt in THAT deep, yes, he wants him to shut up, and to not compare their situations
But its like a gutpunch, this is what you get, to get made fun of, so shut up, and stop talking about it, dissapeared? What a joke, no, he died, people cannot joke about a parent's death with the same easyness; make him uncomfortable and wall yourself up again; he is dead, and you never met him, and so there isnt a way to be made fun of, because theres nothing to pick amd scab at.
Scout knows he isnt dead, and that he knows far more about it that he will ever, ever tell again
