Opening today while the snow falls in Tacoma, with huge thanks to @ringlinglbac ❤️ WORD PLAY: Daredevils & Dead Feminists from Springtide Press January 13 - February 14, 2020 Willis Smith Construction Inc. Galleries in the Larry R. Thompson Academic Center While the techniques, materials and methods may vary, playfully employing word as image is a consistent theme in work created during the past 20 years at Springtide Press. Pushing the boundaries of traditional typographic composition, proprietor Jessica Spring coined the term “daredevil letterpress” while coaxing wood and metal type to dance in circles, curves and angles in her prints and artist books. The tools she invented for this purpose—called Daredevil Furniture—draw upon historic research and have been put to use by printers around the world. “Word Play” also features the Dead Feminists, a series of collaborative broadsides with illustrator Chandler O’Leary that began in 2008. These reproductions of original hand lettered, letterpress printed broadsides include quotes by historic women that highlight political and social justice issues. This cumulation of words and images—given voice at Springtide Press—plays well together. Admission to this exhibition is FREE and open to the public.
