Hearing Loss Organizations and Associations
hey if you can hear and are willing to help me write down lyrics please message me!!
Venting time. I need advice so desperately.
I feel trapped and have nowhere at all to vent all my frustrations. I live with my husband, sister-in-law, and her two children. I love them as my own and would do anything for them. Her oldest is going to be 5 in a few months and is deaf with a CI. Her daughter is 2 and is autistic. Before moving in I thought she was such a great mom and doing all she could to get her kids the care she needed. I was so wrong...I have basically taken over as primary caregiver. She is pregnant with her third kid from the same douchebag who hit it and quit it with her daughter and was abusive towards her son.
In the couple of months I have been there...basically my nerves have become wrecked. Especially for my nephew. He has the implant, but the ONLY time she keeps it on him is when he is in pre-k. He has speech there and is required (obviously) to have the implant on while there. The second he gets home he takes it off and she doesn't give a shit. She doesn't make him keep it on, she doesn't work with him with his speech. The kid is almost five and has no idea how to fucking communicate. I knew she didn't know ASL before moving in so I have been learning and have taken on the duty of teaching him. He has come so far and done so well. He signed his first full sentence today and I was so proud I almost started crying right there. We have come so far.
He also has behavioral issues because she doesn't make him mind AT ALL. He gets so aggressive and frustrated. But how can anyone blame him when his own mom acts like she couldn't give a shit about learning to talk to him. He and I have a pretty close bond as he knows he can come to me and try to talk and I will know what he's saying. I work with him every day, but it's hard when she won't bother learning, or making him mind. When I am babysitting with her not there (much of the time) he is great. He listens and is well behaved. The second she comes home he turns into a psychopath.
I am at my fucking wits end. He has had his implant for THREE FUCKING YEARS and still doesn't understand hardly any speech or noise. It doesn't help that she is too tired to wake up so he ends up missing school half those days. I have tried to wake him up and get him ready and basically send him in to her room to wake her up so all she has to do is take him to the bus but she will have him get in bed and then later say "he was sick." I am so tired and frustrated. I just wish I could get some inside advice from someone in the Deaf community on how to best help this poor kid. I love him so much and I am in so much pain all the time seeing how much he struggles while his mom doesn't seem to give a shit.
I guess this is the end of my rant. I just wish there was more I could do.
