With all the explosions and gunshots, the paladin with the sharpest sight on the galaxy might find some troubling hearing. But fear not, there’s a certain teammate who can help, whispering on his ear. Read more here.

Imagine having a deaf protagonist and their nemesis/main villains specifically learning sign language so they could monologue at them. And making sure that they sign as well as speak while doing their evil broadcasts over the city.
(...Secretly the protagonist is very flattered that they learnt SL just for their show-downs and so makes sure to pay attention to the monologues, not just for the useful info but also because the nemesis always looks so proud of themselves for managing to translate the names of their evil plan/weapon/etc... its kinda sweet)
Out of curiousity, who would be interested in a fantasy novel featuring a hard of hearing or deaf character as a protagonist? Oh, and if anyone knows of any novels with a hard of hearing or deaf protagonist, I'd be really grateful if you could tell me about them!
Walking my five year old home from school today, he gasped, stopped and pointed when he saw the word HELLO written in the concrete. We went over the letters to spell out the word, and I thought - not unreasonably - that he was going to ask me how someone had carved it there. Instead, he exclaimed, "That must've been written by someone who couldn't hear! Like the boy in the story!"
The story in question is a gorgeous picture book he was recently given for his birthday: Boy, by Phil Cummings and Shane Devries. The titular protagonist is deaf, and so communicates with sign language - and also, at a key point in the story, by writing on the ground with a sword. We've only read it twice, but it's made a definite impression on my son, and I was reminded all over again of how important representation in kids' books is, not only so that every child can see themselves as visible and important, but so that all children can recognise human diversity.
As a hearing person, I can't say how members of the Deaf community might feel about Boy, but I do know that reading it has positively expanded my son's perception of the world and the people in it, and as such, I think it's a very wonderful story.

Really hoping to read the opinions of @halflifeofablindsun and @andreashettle (and @demigirlloki who mentioned not being at s9 yet so maybe later) about last night's Doctor Who. Can be watched at http://www.watchseries.li/episode/doctor_who_2005_s9_e3.html
There Will Be Lies by Nick Lake Not at all what I was thinking...nope. BETTER. "...But it nourishes everything. The chain of life depends on it. That is the nature of Coyote." "To... nourish?" "Yes. While washing away. Cleansing the past... But always Coyote is against that which seeks to harm people." Use of native belief, deaf protagonist, dream realm, love of baseball... What a read. And ride. Would love to read again.
