I think my favourite thing about the fanfic murderers row is that Alpha and the director aren't related at all so there's just coincidentally two guys named Leonard Church who happen to look alike and nobody can really explain why

I was thinking about the director today.... I don't like him but God to I like to think about him

He tortured alpha (or at least oversaw that torture) and defended it in two ways. One, that he was trying to end the war and "when faced with extinction every alternative is preferable" and Two, that alpha was an extension of himself, thus torturing Alpha was the same as torturing himself ("while the law has many penalties for the atrocities we inflict on others, there are no punishments for the terrors that we inflict on ourselves.") Which we know is just bullshit, Alpha was his own person, and inflicting pain on him was probably more akin to inflicting pain onto your child

And ironically he said this when he got caught out for torturing alpha but we know ourselves that he did in fact, inflict pain on to others, the freelancers were basically psychologically experimented on without their knowledge and it tore them apart, plus he was implanting them with AI he knew likely weren't 100% stable and as a result almost all the freelancers implanted with A.I. suffered some kind of injury/trauma associated with it; Maine, Carolina, Wash, Wyoming is implied, Tex was never properly hurt but she obviously found omegas influence distressing....it just makes the directors quote about inflicting horrors on yourself that much more infuriating but you know what?

I genuinely believe he still though he was in the right, definitely not in the short term, I think he knew what he was doing was wrong but I think he genuinely felt the ends justified the means and it wasnt until he was sitting in that facility watching that video over and over while waiting for someone to inevitably find him that he realised it was all for nothing

Letting go and giving up

I really like juxtaposition of the season 9 finale and the season 10 finale. At the end of 9 Epsilon!Church lets go of Tex, finally says a real goodbye and prepares to "die" as the memory unit dies. He is sad, and lonely, and ready to die. He's got nothing left. If Tex isn't there, then whats his purpose anyway. At the end of 10 the Director is in much the same way: basically alone, sad, thinking about Allison but finally accepting that nothing he does will bring her back. And he's ready to die, ready to just be done. He has nothing left. But there is a big difference between them, and its difficult to say if Church really understands the weight of that difference yet, or if he's still to thick to realize it. Church's friends find him, risk their lives to get him out and when he protests because he's "at peace" his friends ignore him and drag him out anyway. Church has people who genuinely care about him, genuinely want to save him, and don't give a shit about his self loathing, get over it nancy, quit your bitching. But the Director has driven people so far away that his own daughter, who does love him, simply says goodbye and leaves her pistol. If this is what he wants, then fine. He can have it. He has no one to fight for him, no one to help him. He is truely alone. I think Church gets it a little bit when the guys turn up during the 100 Tex fight, but its hard to say of he really gets his head around it until season 12/13 when the Reds and Blues get their shit together and really start to fight for something. Its a good juxtaposition, anyway.
