#15: Phases - Dear Rouge

Alternative Rock

For me this year, Dear Rouge were kinda dark horse. Their album came out, I gave it a listen through, thought it was good, but then didn’t really come back to it until just recently, when I gave it another listen and got pretty hooked. If you’re a fan of Metric (like me), you’ll really like this. The thing that pops out to me the most is this kind of edge that it’s got; it all sounds very dark and deep. The melodic lines (that are really fun thanks to the chromaticism that they put in there) and grooves have this sense of driving urgency to them, and that is thanks in part to the really fun and distorted vocal work and lyrical content that is filled with pining. Something else that’s really nice is the balance between the guitars and synths trading off the accents in the music, as it doesn’t ever feel like either overshadows the other. You’ve got the more guitar-driven tracks like Boys & Blondes, and then songs like Flashes that are more synth-driven, and then other tracks that flawlessly blend the two. I truly believe that Dear Rouge has perfected the dark synth rock formula, and Phases is proof of that.

#15: Simple Dude - Tokyo Police Club

Rock

I wasn’t super impressed by Tokyo Police Club’s album that they put out this year, but this song really stood out to me. Everything just feels so cute and genuine - the hook of this song is super infectious, and I think David Monks’ voice fits the melody and lyrical content perfectly. The softer (but still really driving and energetic) guitar chords are a really good and subdued complement, and the buildups are really nice as well. Listening to this song just makes me smile and feel warm and fuzzy, tbh. Send it to someone you have a crush on or something.
