We asked Dear Tomas some questions about his first gig at Dalston Club next Wednesday.
1. Introduce yourself: where are you from? What do you do for life?
My name is Thomas and I write music under the artist name Dear Tomas. I’m from Gothenburg on the west coast of Sweden but have been living in London since 2012. When I’m not writing music I work as digital designer.
2. Who is behind Dear Tomas? Is it a personal project or is it more like a band?
Dear Tomas is a project that is just in it’s infant state and at the moment it’s driven by myself alone with some additional help from my friend David during live performance. For this project I’ll probably stick to writing music by myself, although I would definitely be up to co-producing at some point to get some fresh perspective on my songs.
3. Is there any release date for your first EP/LP? What can we expect from your music?
Working full time and writing music on the side always makes setting deadlines tricky. I’m planning to release something this year but can’t be more specific than that right now. At the moment I’m balancing the sound which is mostly analog with some electronic sounds. I’m slowly starting to find a sound that I can identify with which is really exciting.
4. How is it to create music in London compared to Gothenburg? Did it influence you somehow?
Moving to London was a big decision in my life and it has definitely changed me as a person to some extent. I’m sure it has affected my song writing as well but I haven’t thought about it much yet. I was tired of playing in rock bands when I left Sweden and my taste in music shifted during that time. I think that urge to do something different and change in musical taste were bigger influences in my writing than the change of environment.
5. How is your set up gonna be for Dalston Club gig?
The set will be short and sweet. This will be the first time I play the songs live and the first time ever I play with backtracks. Mine and David’s guitars as well as the vocals and the backtracks will all be processed by my laptop. Fingers crossed everything will work.
