GRUMPY BEAR: A Vignette

Sirius gulped, staring across the room at the tiny baby in his aunt’s arms. Her hair had changed colors three time since he’d been here, but Nyphodora had grown no bigger. Too small to be real, not big enough to even lift her own head. Breakable.
At thirteen, Sirius had already learned how good he was at breaking things, at destroying everything he touched. He was good at earning detentions, at inventing new spells and sneaking out of his dormitory at night. He was particularly good at pissing off his mother so badly, he’d have no choice but to leave for the night. And it was not the first time he’d ended up here, at Andromeda’s door with a black eye and a small overnight bag, wondering if her couch was free until things blew over.
But it was the first time he’d come to share his aunt’s place with the baby. He wanted to ask to hold her, but every time he dared open his mouth, the words refused to come out.
A Groom For Two

Narcissa giggled and nodded, nodded and giggled. “Very sure,” she said, pausing to grin toothily around the lip of her goblet. “Very, very sure,” she added, in case Andromeda wasn’t keeping up. “He is, as you say, pretty enough -- barely!”
That wasn’t true at all; Lucius Malfoy was gorgeous. That was why Narcissa had started looking his way in the first place, of course; she would never have allowed herself to fall in love with anyone who wasn’t some measure of delectably attractive. And maybe she wasn’t exactly in love yet -- but she was certainly enjoying her burgeoning infatuation, and wasn’t that quite nearly the same thing? Close enough for marriage, certainly.
Pulling herself together after Andromeda’s deliciously wicked insinuation was difficult (not helped, perhaps, but the rather larger than usual amount of widdershins wine she had consumed that evening) but Narcissa managed; this was a serious subject, after all! She settled herself more comfortably in the charming little loveseat that the two sisters had commandeered half-an-hour ago, and took another sip of her drink to fortify herself.
“Well,” Narcissa said breathily, “I believe that it would be only appropriate for him to start with said tongue -- he is quite proud of how adeptly he uses it, you know.” She had to pause for another giggle, got distracted by the ridiculousness of comparing how Lucius doubtless used his silvered tongue at the Ministry versus how she intended him to make use of it, took a deep breath and forged on: “I suppose he ought to go up from there--”
A wicked gleam flashed like torchlight off black ice in Narcissa’s cool blue eyes. She tore her eyes away from the tall blonde wizard swanning across the dance floor with a flustered-looking elderly Mrs. Nott and smirked at her sister. “But maybe you’d do a better job of detailing what might come next, dearest?” Narcissa fluttered her eyelashes. “The voice of experience, and all that.”
