on narcissa malfoy
i always joke with my friends that the malfoy family is matriarchal, partly because i, personally, would let narcissa boss me around in a heartbeat, but also because i actually think there’s a solid canon backing that she’s like. the Head Bitch of the family. especially later on in the series. (it’s also why i think reading lucius as abusive is a misreading of their relationship, but whatever.)
just in general, i will never understand the reading that she’s meek or timid. we see so little of her character but with what we do see, she defies voldemort twice (lying about harry and going to severus for help), doesn’t shy away from standing up for herself/her family, seemingly holds the family together when lucius has his fall from grace, is not the least bit scared of her sister, and is more than willing to throw hands with her son’s rivals in public. to me, she’s very much lucius’ equal, even if she isn’t a sadist like her husband or sister (and i suppose there’s not a whole lot of canon material on that either way, so you can’t say for sure what she is). her capacity for compassion does not automatically make her kind, nor weak, especially since her compassion does not seem to extend past her family.
personally, narcissa gives me a lot of lady macbeth vibes. particularly the whole ‘look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under it.’ (‘s also why i think she’s aptly named—daffodils are pretty and poisonous.) but back to my point:
the example of narcissa’s authority pre-everything going to shit is obviously this:
which is easily passable as an insignificant win in a family discussion, but then
you’ve got
stuff like
this
i haven’t read the books in a couple of years, so these examples are just the ones i can pluck from the top of my head, but i think it’s very interesting that narcissa is generally the one who defends the family, who lucius and draco turn to for guidance, and who is also just. the only malfoy the other death eaters seem to really respect (dh era).
there’s also the matter of movie canon, which i’m pretty eh with, but i do prefer the malfoy family ending in the films to the one in the books. and the fact that it’s narcissa who instigates it—who gets draco to come to them after he’s ignored lucius’ call, who walks away and calls for lucius to follow (and then he does)—is a nice representation of the authority she has in the books, i think. and then there’s also this:
which i could wax poetic on for hours, but it’d mostly just be shippy ramblings.
anyway. tl;dr: the timid, meek narcissa you sometimes see in fanon is ridiculous.
“ Don’t you d a r e — Don’t you DARE blame my husband ! ” — said Narcissa, in a low and deadly voice.
You will become a graveyard of all the women you once were before you rise one morning embraced by your own skin.
You will swallow a thousand different names before you taste the meaning held within your own.
Lucissa as high school sweethearts?
I’m doing headcanons!
Lucissa as high school sweethearts = my heart is whole again.
Lucius and Narcissa met when they were like 8, probably. Introduced by their fathers, pureblood things and all that. (This is before Cissa comes out as trans!)
When they get to Hogwarts, Lucius being one year above her, he’s crushing on her from day one tbh. They’re 11 and 12 and she notices but doesn’t feel the same way (yet), and it’s kinda adorable.
Skip to when Narcissa is around 14/15 and she comes out and she transitions, and one of the first things she notices about Lucius is that he’s still looking at her like she’s his entire world. It’d be sad if this didn’t have a happy ending.
Narcissa becomes a prefect in fifth year, and Lucius is one too, later to become head boy when he is in his seventh year. They talk more than before, and he really does try to hide how much he’s falling for her but she can see right through him.
She isn’t sure exactly if she has a crush on him too, or if it’s more the fact that he so obviously loves her and she likes that kind of attention. What can I say, she’s vain and likes being praised.
Narcissa kisses him first.
In private, because she’s classy; with no hesitation, because she’s Narcissa.
She realises pretty quickly that she’s also definitely in love with Lucius. It’s not just about the attention he gives her (though it does help his case).
So from pretty much halfway through her fifth year to the end of her sixth year, they’re very obviously Hogwarts new IT couple. Rich, beautiful, blatantly in love, and they know it.
Everyone either envies her or envies him or envies both; they know this and it only makes things better. Who doesn’t love knowing they’re dating the most beautiful person in the school? (By their own judgement)
No one is surprised when she comes back to Hogwarts after Christmas in her sixth year with an engagement ring on her finger. No one should be surprised she shows it off to anyone who will let her.
Even after he’s graduated he makes sure to show up at every Hogsmeade weekend, and more often than not the Malfoy owl strikes down at the Slytherin table with more jewellery and books on mythology.
Until they build a much worse reputation during the first war, anyone you ask would point to Lucius and Narcissa as that couple, who everyone knew and everyone knew would always be together.
Their reputation faltered (by their own fault), but their love never did.

Tea and Ginger
evenbyanothername:
Rose shrugged lightly, trying to arrange herself in the high-backed chair in some manner that looked remotely graceful. Of course, that wasn’t always easy for Rose. Grace did not exactly come naturally.
“It wasn’t a problem,” she offered. “I mean, I was a bit surprised to get your owl, but I didn’t exactly have a packed social calendar today.”
Truthfully, if she wasn’t with Albus, Scorpius, or Cora, Rose’s social schedule tended to be fairly wide open. And, obviously Narcissa would have checked with Scorpius first.
“Is it?” She asked, arching a ginger eyebrow. “I mean, I don’t exactly know what we have to talk about.”
Narcissa thought Rose was inferior by the very nature of her birth. Rose thought Narcissa was a self-important racist. Honestly, she didn’t see how tea could fix that no matter how good the tea was.
Narcissa’s smile did not show her teeth because she was a lady and ladies only bared their teeth when they wanted to. Anyone who knew her properly would have seen the fangs lurking in the fine lines that framed the corners of her shapely pink lips anyway, of course -- but Rose Granger-Weasley didn’t strike Narcissa as the type to notice things like that. A pity; they might have saved a great deal of time if only she were...but the girl was a Gryffindor, and while Narcissa knew better than to weigh a person solely on the basis of their sorting, she also knew Gryffindors. And they were almost never capable of looking beyond themselves long enough to make any astute observations.
So she smiled at Rose, and sipped her tea, and said untruthfully, “How fortunate for me.”
Oh dear, was the girl trying to be coy? Or was she just truly that dense? Narcissa would have assumed the latter, given her lineage and personality, but Scorpius did consider her a friend; she had to have some redeeming qualities hidden beneath that ungainly mass of red curls. If Rose were that dense, surely Scorpius would have grown bored with her company years ago! And the sheer fact that they were here, today, having tea, served as pointed testimony to the fact that he hadn’t. Coyness it was, then.
“Oh?” Narcissa said lightly. “So it’s some other...” Half-blood mongrel, her brain filled-in, although what she said aloud was merely, “witch, who has been so occupying my only grandson’s time of late? My apologies for the confusion, I though it was you.”
There was, of course, no confusion. Narcissa was rarely confused on any social matter -- especially not one involving with whom her precious Scorpius was spending his time.
Tea and Ginger
@evenbyanothername
Narcissa Malfoy was not fully pleased about her afternoon’s plans -- but then, it had been a very very long time since she had felt fully pleased about the world anyway. Oh, there had been good times through the years -- but fully please with the way her life was unfolding? That feeling had departed so long ago that remembering it now felt more like a dream.
This felt more like a nightmare, but she had certainly endured worse for those she loved, and she would endure this too. It wasn’t even the first time she had had to face unpleasant straights with a smile -- and she was smiling now. Coolly, politely, unenthusiastically. But she was smiling. The girl in front of her really could ask for no more, and deserved far less.
“Miss Granger-Weasley,” she said, her teeth bright and sharp and fully visible between her rose-rimmed lips. “How pleasant of you to join me.” It required the barest flick of her finger to command the elf to serve their tea; unlike some households, the Malfoys did not resort to shouting at their servants -- not unless they had to, of course. Narcissa preferred her elves to be unobtrusive, obedient, and silent. Lucius went in for obsequious bows and scraping more than she did, and she often allowed the elves to defer to his tastes when he was in the room as well -- but today, there was only her...and the half-blood.
“I do appreciate you making time in your schedule for me,” Narcissa continued, every hint of sarcasm carefully pressed out of her tone like a dead flower crushed between the pages of a collector’s book. “It’s well past time we had ourselves a little discussion, don’t you think?”
Black Babytalk
@apcgee (Bellatix)
Narcissa bounced slightly as she walked -- a motion she already fell into naturally only three short weeks after her son’s birth -- soothing the fussy, sleepy baby into contented snuggling and silence. She cooed at him indulgently and tapped a finger feather-light against his impossible tiny little nub of a nose before turning to throw a tired yet beaming smile at her sister who watched from beside the nursery door.
This was the first time she had seen Bella alone (well, alone save for Draco, and much as Cissy adored her son he was too young yet to count as company even in her delusional maternal eyes) since before the birth. Oh, she had seen Bella several times since then -- but always in short spurts amidst a busy collection of others: husbands, brothers-in-law, Marked allies...even the bright-eyed Crouch boy who followed after the Lestrange brothers like a starving hippogriff cub. The Dark Lord’s cause kept all his servants quite busy of course, and no one was a more devoted servant than Bellatrix Lestrange -- but she had been so especially busy these last three weeks, so busy she had barely had a chance to meet her new nephew in anything but passing glances and well-wishes thrown over a departing black-clad shoulder.
Truly the timing was uncanny.
Now Narcissa walked over and held the precious bundle out to her sister -- thrust him at her, almost -- and smiled brightly. “You’ll want to hold him, of course, now you’ve finally got the chance,” she said. It wasn’t a question.
Hello folks I am BACK!

Aren’t You Helpful?
She was going to get in trouble. (It was she, right? Rex was pretty sure, mostly sure. Almost positively sure)
Not that Rex cared. Because Rex had better things to be doing–even if they were taking the long bus home instead of the one that went almost direct. Rex had better things to be doing other than staring at the girl (Rex was positive now) and watching the way her fingers flitted about the edge of her dress (or were the robes? surely not, no one would be so fucking stupid).
But Rex couldn’t help it, either. She didn’t look—-quite right. Or something was different. The way some of the models in magazines looked a little different. That shade of androgynous.
Or maybe something else.
It made Rex uncomfortable. And utterly certain they weren’t the only one’s who’d noticed.
When the bus pulled up, Rex budged up beside her, nudged her a bit too hard, maybe, and said, “You’ve forgotten your student’s, haven’t you? Lets to get it.”
It felt kind of stupid, saying it, but Rex didn’t like the itch between shoulder blades, the feeling of being watched. Rex was certain she wouldn’t have liked it, either, if she had noticed at all. “Please.” It felt awful to say it–even after so much time with the Parkers. Something at the back of his mind said Never stoop, Regulus.
Narcissa jumped, almost went for her wand, stopped herself just in time; instead she turned and treated the filthy little Muggle who had bumped into her to her most furious glare. (It wasn’t as good as Bella’s. When she glared at someone they cringed and curdled and cowered. Sometimes even Dolohov flinched when Bella glared at him – Cissy had seen it. But she did her best to mimic her oldest sister as she glowered at the wretched creature.) Then the glare faltered, flickered, at the words that followed the collision.
“Forgotten my what?” Narcissa snapped, confused and angry about being confused. She shoved her hair back out of her eyes and stared at the strange Muggle child who had knocked into her. It wasn’t someone she recognized, but the uniform said boy and the attitude said brat. She glowered. “I think you’ve mistaken me for someone else,” she said coldly, her teeth clenched.
What was happening? Was this brat going to ruin everything? And after she had gone to the great lengths of actually riding one of those infernal buses, too – that wasn’t fair at all. Cissy hated the contraptions that Muggles drove around, especially the tall buses with their too-large wheels and their flat glass fronts and their screeching, squeaking brakes. They set her teeth on edge even when she wasn’t trapped inside the metal cage of their walls. But for a girl who couldn’t Apparate, sometimes a bus was necessary.
Only now she couldn’t remember – was this her stop? Or did she have to endure this jolting, jittering transport for longer? The brat had broken her concentration, had distracted her; what more did he want?
And was he just a brat, or was he something else? As far as she knew the Witch Hunters hadn’t stooped to using children yet but there was a first time for everything and Cissy knew that Muggles were barbaric, savage animals; really what was going to stop them from using children as their agents? Could this boy be here to watch for wix, maybe signalling to his allies if he spotted any? Or might he be armed himself? Narcissa slid away as far as she could on the clammy surface of the bench-seats they were sharing and studied the boy with a sharper eye. There was something about him that set her teeth on edge, something more than the fact that he was a Muggle and a brat…
What was it?

A Groom For Two
@dearestregards | continued from this.
Narcissa giggled and nodded, nodded and giggled. “Very sure,” she said, pausing to grin toothily around the lip of her goblet. “Very, very sure,” she added, in case Andromeda wasn’t keeping up. “He is, as you say, pretty enough -- barely!”
That wasn’t true at all; Lucius Malfoy was gorgeous. That was why Narcissa had started looking his way in the first place, of course; she would never have allowed herself to fall in love with anyone who wasn’t some measure of delectably attractive. And maybe she wasn’t exactly in love yet -- but she was certainly enjoying her burgeoning infatuation, and wasn’t that quite nearly the same thing? Close enough for marriage, certainly.
Pulling herself together after Andromeda’s deliciously wicked insinuation was difficult (not helped, perhaps, but the rather larger than usual amount of widdershins wine she had consumed that evening) but Narcissa managed; this was a serious subject, after all! She settled herself more comfortably in the charming little loveseat that the two sisters had commandeered half-an-hour ago, and took another sip of her drink to fortify herself.
“Well,” Narcissa said breathily, “I believe that it would be only appropriate for him to start with said tongue -- he is quite proud of how adeptly he uses it, you know.” She had to pause for another giggle, got distracted by the ridiculousness of comparing how Lucius doubtless used his silvered tongue at the Ministry versus how she intended him to make use of it, took a deep breath and forged on: “I suppose he ought to go up from there--”
A wicked gleam flashed like torchlight off black ice in Narcissa’s cool blue eyes. She tore her eyes away from the tall blonde wizard swanning across the dance floor with a flustered-looking elderly Mrs. Nott and smirked at her sister. “But maybe you’d do a better job of detailing what might come next, dearest?” Narcissa fluttered her eyelashes. “The voice of experience, and all that.”
🗝️ I don't know who I even have for this... Emmeline? Snape??? Giggly gossip with Narcissa? Awkward "sex ed talk" with Muddied Draco? idk dude run with it or not, your call!
“Are you sure?” Andromeda had had more then a couple glasses of wine by this point at the party, settling her into a tipsy daze that let her shrug her posture into a slouch that half wrapped around her little sister. Or not so little, as it turned out, given she was letting Andromeda know just who she was intending to snatch up for marriage.
And thus snatch up for Andromeda, too. How embarrassing, Andromeda thought and picked another glass from a waiter. One indescression and then…what? A two for one.
It was amazing Narcissa had agreed to it. But it would be a miracle if her potential husband agreed to it–given the secondary rule of no the sisters would not sleep together. A packaged deal, saving face, only went so far.
“He is almost as pretty as you.” She continued, turning form her glass to burry her face half in Narcissa’s hair. “Or maybe half as pretty. And he clearly knows how to use his tongue but anything more then that?”
She might as well use her reputation as a harlot. “What do you imagine he might do with you, Cissa?”
Black-Hearted Lion Cubs
snufflesmajor:
Asked.
Sirius had asked.
Perhaps he would have been placed in Gryffindor regardless and his request to be with his cousin–in the same House as the boy he had met on the train had boasted of–had meant nothing at all. But he had still asked, still debated and told the Hat he needed just a moment to think, and had still asked–after asking if he could join Narcissa–if he could learn to be brave since he didn’t feel as though he was.
As the Professor–a witch who looked a little smug at his Sorting–ushered him in the direction of Gryffindor table, he felt as though he were nothing more than a shadow. His body felt light and new, as though it wasn’t quite his own, but the familiar churn of anxiety in the pit of his stomach assured him it was.
Everything felt off. Confusing. Exciting. Wrong.
Sirius wasn’t entirely sure how he made it to the table. He had kept his eyes on Narcissa who had thankfully kept hers elsewhere; he couldn’t bear to see the fear undoubtedly written on her face until he was at least sitting. Slumped in his seat like a man waiting for the axe to fall, he reached under the table and snatched her hand in his.
It wouldn’t be so bad if it was the both of them, right? As long as they stayed with each other they would never find themselves too alone.
“Be brave?” He replied quietly as the next name was called for the hat. His voice was full of false confidence, but the tremor in his hand was impossible to miss and he kept his eyes on the empty plate across from him. “It’s why we are here, isn’t it?”
Narcissa clung to Sirius’s fingers as though they were a rope that might pull her back to safe and familiar shores. There was no chance of that happening -- and indeed, she instead felt guilty over the thought that her presence at the Gryffindor table might have somehow helped tug him toward her -- but she clutched at the offered hand nonetheless.
His words made her stomach do a flip, and she leaned backwards away from him -- but without letting go of the thin lifeline of his familiar fingers. “Be brave?” she repeated, the words a distraught hiss that were almost swallowed by the applause for some hapless Hufflepuff whose sorting had followed Sirius’s. “That’s...”
Sickening. Far too pointed a statement. Narcissa had never left less brave in her life -- nor less interested in being brave, if that was indeed what had landed her here. She couldn’t stop herself glancing from sideways at the Slytherin table on the far side of the room, but fortunately it was too quick a look for her to make-out any familiar features and she turned back to Sirius before she risked making eye contact with either of her sisters.
“That’s not why we’re here,” she said crisply. “We’re here because something went wrong with the sorting, obviously. The hat made an error -- two errors.” She tossed her head firmly, distantly noting the fleeting wish that her hair was long enough for her to throw it over her shoulder like Bellatrix did hers when she was refusing to be cowed for breaking some rule or another. Soon, she promised herself, and turned her attention back to the boy sitting beside her.
“It’s the only possible explanation,” Narcissa declared, voice defiant -- a challenge. “Isn’t it?”
Bound by Blood and Bites
@dearestregards | continued from this.
Narcissa sank to the ground alongside her sister, heeding neither the dirt nor the blood soaking into her robes. There was plenty of other blood to be concerned with, all of it oozing from the ugly rent in Andromeda’s skin. It was easier to sit with her than to try to support both their weight when her own knees were wobbling and Andromeda was barely flopping.
Easier than she had expected to press her hands to the wound, trying to staunch the flow of blood with nothing but her own palms -- healing spells didn’t work on Cursed wounds, she remembered that much not only from her old Defense Against the Dark Arts Lessons but from the scars that stretched across her collarbone -- not even a flicker of concern at the uncleanliness of a lycanthropic wound tugging at her sensibilities, for once not because she was conscious of the taint in her own blood; this was her sister and it would take more than a fear of corruption to keep Narcissa from trying to help her.
“Your wand won’t help, dearest,” she said, trying and failing to offer a reassuring smile. “Remember? Not on the Bite.” She looked up over her shoulder, looked for help. Why had no one come over with the poultice of silver and aconite that should have been ready? They couldn’t be too busy; no matter how many wix were being granted the Bite tonight, this was Andromeda Black lying here, bleeding -- surely she ranked first concern!
The sight of on particular set of robes sent Narcissa’s temper boiling up over her fear. “You!” she shrieked at Fenrir Greyback. “You did this! You went too far!” He turned his back. “Fix it!” Narcissa screamed, but Greyback walked away as though he hadn’t heard.
Narcissa bent low over her sister again, too consumed with worry for Andromeda to worry that she had just yelled at the pack leader. “You’re going to be fine, dearest,” she told her soothingly. “Nothing to worry about -- this is normal. No need to panic.” Had she ever told a more transparent lie? Narcissa could’t recall. She brushed damp hair out of Andromeda’s face, leaving bloody streaks behind. “Everything’s fine. How does it feel? Any better yet?”
