Love Letters and Bullets
A letter was sent to Bowan while she was away, a letter that would sit there and wait. Wait for eternity if it had too. A letter can be so meaningless, but the contents of it can say so much. It can say what kind of person someone is. It can say the importance, even before reading the words. The letter Bowan received had slight weight, but nothing great to it though upon opening she would find another letter inside. This letter inside was stained with slight bits of blood. This envelope contained the real letter, the real note, this letter contained two bloodied and spent bullets, blood that had mostly rubbed off on the envelope and letter. The words on the letter were not smudged and the writing itself looked almost to be written elegantly as if by someone who was a nobleman even,
“Been awhile, hasn’t it? I thought your face looked familiar and it isn’t often that I can say I saw a ghost. How have you been? It must be odd to be a walking corpse, it must be odd to know that you cheated death, but we will get to that soon. I hope you have not forgotten about me and in case we need to reintroduce myself they call me Deathbreathe and the formalities of who I am with do not need to be said as you already know that, it is why you are in trouble. Now to discuss the trouble.
Dear, you know you committed a tremendous crime. One that goes against the laws of men. The laws of pirates. You committed a crime against Death. I want you to pick up and look at the two bullets. They look used do they not? I placed them in someone else when I shot them in the same fashion I shot you. That person is dead. Why I say this is because you should have died the same way. You cheated Death and as one who sails with Death I am to deliver what it is that was stolen from it. So I leave you with two choices. You can surrender yourself to the sea and kill yourself where all can see so that I may know and hear the news of your death, then all debts will be paid. The second choice is to give Death the price of what it is to cheat. Death is unforgiving to cheaters, and the one who cheats it has to be punished. I will start first with people you know that have made you smile or that you have made smile, the people you protect that you care about. From there I will go to your friends, your comrades, whatever you may call them. Then it will be your family. Your kids, your husband, wife if that is your preference and then finally? Finally it will be you.
Those are the terms of Death. They are not my terms. They are not my rules. We all pay this price if you cheat Death.”
