Cancer as Debbie Gallagher

Caution: Spoilers Ahead

Oh, Debbie. Once upon a time, a young girl with a big heart and obvious potential began to grow up. Essentially, it was all downhill from there. Debbie Gallagher has been the most intense rollercoaster of a character I have ever seen. However, she outlines what puberty does to a lot of young girls very well. She’s fiercely protective of her family, specifically her daughter, Frances/Harriet (her name changes based on Debbie’s relationship to Frank). Debbie has become alienated from Fiona, as Fiona did not want her to go through with having the baby, but she did anyway. However, Debbie has made several attempts to reach out to Fiona, while also ignoring Fiona’s attempts to mend things between them. Debbie has...unorthodox methods when it comes to getting things done, but they are always done. 

True to a Cancer’s nature, Debbie is unpredictable in what emotion she will feel that day. Especially pre-pubescent Debbie, melancholic because all her friends were getting their period and having sex while she wasn’t. This launched her into an extreme version of disappointment that can only be seen by people who feel things too much. A “crybaby” in her very nature.

Debbie’s loyalty and nurturing for Frannie reminds me of the role that Cancers tend to play out, as caregivers. She wanted a baby so badly, that she was willing to lie to her short-lived boyfriend, Derek, about “being on the pill”. She wasn’t yet, and that’s what did it. Derek eventually took off and moved to Florida, away from the responsibility of having a kid and all of Debbie’s baby mama drama. 

In the beginning seasons, Debbie was really the heart of who the Gallaghers were. She was the only one left with the innocence and kind heart that all the other Gallaghers lost through years of dealing with Frank, Monica, and the hardships of Southside Chicago. She was home for them, pure and incredibly mature for her age, making her an interesting person to talk to. 

Even though Debbie went south as she got her period and began finding herself as a woman, I can say with confidence that it looks like her storyline is heading up. She is studying to become a welder, taking care of her daughter, and fostering healthy relationships with the people she cares about.
