For the upcoming release of Debian 7.0 Wheezy, they have chosen to default the desktop to XFCE instead of Gnome. Personally, I like that choice. I have used vanilla Gnome 3 only once but it was enough to drive me away from it. XFCE is currently my top choice for a desktop environment. I have played with MATE and Cinnamon in Linux Mint 12; the latter looks promising.
