No Patriarchy...just MATRIARCHY
I'm reading a fantasy book about a desert culture where woman are the dominant gender in society. Women strive to become warriors while men stay in the village and...herd sheep? Though the occasional man gets to be a "warden" and defend the village. There's a race of telepathic saber-toothed lions that bond with people, but almost exclusively women.
A warrior woman comments with a good natured laugh about how, oh, she can perhaps see how a young man would want to ride in the dangerous wilderness with women rather than stay home all the time, and it comes off like a late 1800s gentleman chuckling at a Most Unorthodox Young Lady.
There is a holiday just for young women to make a celebration of taking their first lover. If a man is pursued by a woman on this holiday or any other time, instead of saying he's losing his "virginity" to X woman, they say he is losing his "dignity" to her.
Anyway, the story is about how the main character is a Newly Minted Warrior Girl, skilled but notably arrogant about it, and the scarily powerful king from another nation is secretly her father and pretending to give a damn about her while probably wanting to use her as a tool for a magic-laden plot of sorts. But this background culture of women ruling the desert is so...uh, weird and interesting. I can't remember ever reading about a culture like this.
The writing of the book sometimes teeters into "so wordy and archaic and high-falutin fantasy that I want to say fuckin cool your jets and get to the point, Tolkien" and sometimes being just very satisfying, engrossing and cool.
The book is called The Dragon's Legacy. I wish its cover wasn't so blah-looking for its very interesting culture and world. It looks like it was mad with a google template of a dragon and some kind of airbrush tool.

Went to the bookshop today first time in over a month and here is the end result (so many new titles :D). I didn’t go completely crazy which was a definite plus.
