Quiet... Quiet doesn’t even begin to describe it. Every creak, every drip of water, echoes in the emptiness. You’d think a home without the warmth of the furnace would feel cold, but I do not feel cold.
I feel... nothing. Like I'm trapped in purgatory, as if I’m wandering through a dense fog. I think I catch glimpses of movement from the corner of my eye or hear my name called from a distant room, but no matter how many times I look, there’s nothing.
I knew there wouldn’t be. It’s impossible, yet I hoped my desperation might manifest into something physical.
Since Mama’s and Papa’s funeral, I’ve felt nothing but their lingering presence. Dearest Heavenly Father, this is not the change I hoped for.

The joy of moving into a new home was still fresh on Lucile & Josephine's moods. Though it was much farther from town than either of them would have liked, they were accustomed to such isolation.
With distance came the gift of privacy, a precious commodity for the secret relationship they shared.
This house was destined to be the perfect sanctuary for raising their child, being so high up on the ridge protected them from prying eyes.
As Josephine's pregnancy teetered on the brink of the infant's arrival, both she and Lucile had been running themselves ragged, consumed by the frantic need to make everything ready for the new life about to enter their world.
The nursery was a bit of an organized mess, lacking fancy wallpaper or neatly decorated shelves filled with toys. Instead, it held a small, hand-woven bassinet that Lucile had lovingly put together, lined with a few comfortably plush blankets.
It wasn't much, but she had one just like it when she was a baby. If her mama thought it was good enough for her, surely it would suit her future nephew just fine.
Now it was only a waiting game, which is precisely why they decided to take a day to enjoy themselves and have a break from chores before the real work of taking care of a newborn began.
Given Josephine's condition and the swiftly dropping temperatures, a long walk was out of the question. However, a short stroll in the crisp, cool air would do them both some good.
It wasn't the most impressive date, but for just the two of them, it was perfect.
"What is it?" Josephine laughed,
"You'll see! Just a little farther, around this tree," Lucile replied.
Josephine gasped at the sight of an old gazebo, hidden in the shadows of a towering tree strewn with fallen leaves.
"Look!, a little secret just yards from our house! It was all covered in overgrown brush, but I managed to clear it for us," Lucile beamed.
" I was thinking of moving a table out here, maybe we could have some tea and it can keep us shaded in the heat. "
" Oh, The baby and I would love that Lucie! ", Lucile laughed " You and the baby can have the perfect spot to relax! "
After a brief pause, Lucile continued, "I know we don't like to think the past, but do you remember the gazebo we had back at home? The one we used to hang out under in Henford?"
"Of course I do… but this is our home now. We shouldn't dwell on what we left behind. It still hurts too much."
"I know… But I'm not sad," Lucile said softly.
She gently clasped Josephine's hands, bringing them to her lips and placing a tender kiss on her fingers.
"I love you, and whoever this baby turns out to be. I want you to know I'm going to be there for both of you, no matter what."
Josephine gently caressed Lucile's shoulder, her hand moving up and down in a soothing motion.
"Lucie, you don't have anything to prove. You're going to be a wonderful mother."
"Everything that's happened leading up to me being with you?… I wouldn't have it any other way."
Lucie struggled to hold back tears. It was hard not to feel regrets; they had lost everything, and the world seemed constantly against their very existence. The path ahead would undoubtedly bring more hardships. But together? Together, everything felt possible.
Quickly stifling a few sniffles, Lucile fumbled with one of her skirt pockets. "One more thing..." she said, her voice trembling.
Josephine gasped, her hand flying to her chest, as Lucile procured a small ring and gently took Josephine's hand, sliding it onto her finger.
"When did you—?" Josephine stammered, her eyes wide with surprise.
"While we were pawning off the silver," Lucile replied softly. "I saw how heartbroken you were parting with most of your nice jewelry. "
"I wanted to get you something special… I know it's not much, but—" Lucile's voice wavered.
Josephine silenced her with a tender embrace, wrapping her arms around Lucile's shoulders.
"Shush now… It's perfect."
It was on a somber, rain-swept spring day that Eddy’s body, weary from months of relentless illness, finally surrendered to its affliction.
Eddy was laid to rest beside Helena under the brooding canopy of oaks, the family bringing small tokens of remembrance—flowers, candles flickering against the wind, and the heavy scent of earth mingling with the rain.
Though the Coombes were invited to both funerals, they failed to attend. Silas muttered something about business obligations, while Edith claimed prior social engagements, revealing their priorities in stark relief. Despite their long-standing friendship with the Harrington's, it seemed societal stature was most important.
Other Farmers the Harrington's had worked with gathered in to respect Eddy and Helena’s memory.

The mention of the word "temporary" pulled Lucile back into reality. "What do you mean, temporary? If it even comes to that, we'll just bury Ma and Pa here."
She hated even having to talk about this so soon.
Silas took a deep breath, trying to choosing his words carefully.
"I understand how you feel, Lucile. But we need to be prepared. The doctors aren't hopeful, We can honor them properly and keep them close. "
"It makes no sense to move them to a cemetery when they can be laid to rest here!" Lucile protested, her voice trembling with emotion.
Silas rubbed his temples, trying to remain composed. "Lucile, you need to think ahead! My work isn't going to keep me here forever. I'm planning to move to New York, and once that's finalized, the land here will be sold."
" It will be easier to move when they are properly accommodated in a cemetery. "
Rage boiled over in Lucile. "You understand how I feel? I've been the one tending to Mother and Father since before they fell ill!
"I've bathed them, changed their sheets, fed them medicine and have been doing all the farm work myself! "
" And now this is how you tell me that after Ma and Pa's death, you'll sell off the land?"
"I'm the one paying for everything!" Silas finally shouted back. "The medicine and taxes all fall on me! The house is barely standing, and no one will want to purchase the land with a old property on it!"
"It's your fault you failed to marry someone to help with this burden. Instead, I'm saddled with the obligation to accommodate you! "
"All I've ever done is take care of our family, This is all I have Silas!"
"You don't have anything!" he shouted. "The land belongs to me! You're being hysterical. I can never talk to you because you're always like this. If you wanted to live here, you should've made something of yourself, like I did!"
Lucile was so angry she couldn't speak... the stress of this and all that was to come was just too much to take in right now.
Silas finally calmed at her silence.
"Now that we agree-"
"More tea?" Josephine's voice sounded from the parlor doorway, bringing their argument to a sudden halt.
Silas straightened up, his tone abruptly changing. "No, we were just finished. Clean this up, I'll be in my office." He rose from his seat, avoiding Lucile's eyes, and walked out of the room.
Once the slam of his office door could finally be heard Lucile took a deep breath, trying to steady herself as Josephine began tidying up the papers and teacups.
"I'm sorry..." Lucile murmured, her voice shaky.
" Don't be, we're here for you. "
"You… had me."
Josephine's lip quivered as she spoke, "I don’t have anything, Lucie. I have a husband."
"My family doesn’t even respond to my letters... The only connection I get is through Silas, who helps my father keep tabs on me."
"I was sent away for years and then immediately handed over like livestock to your family."
Lucile gently reached out, her hand lightly touching Josephine's arm. Josephine continued, her eyes brimming with unshed tears.
"You need time to think of the right words? Maybe I would need time to figure out how to live without my best friend!"
Lucile’s heart sank. In her mourning, she had been unknowingly selfish. These past months had been difficult for Josephine too: the wedding, the farming, caring for her parents, living with Silas, complying with his demands, and still finding time to check on her...
"Josie... I’ve been so selfish."
"I had no idea," Lucile whispered, "I wish you had told me. I could have been there for you."
Lucile stepped forward, looking down, caressing her hands while Josephine stifled her sniffles to reply. "Perhaps I’m at fault as well. I didn’t want to put any more pressure on you… You were already so wracked with worry."
Josephine lovingly stroked Lucile's fingers. "If we ever see each other again… I hope we can talk more."
The word "if" struck Lucile painfully, a sharp pang in her heart. If was right; this might be the last time she ever saw or heard Josephine. An overwhelming fear gripped her. Should she risk ruining the moment further?
Without hesitation, Lucile reached up, brushing wet strands of hair from Josephine's face.
"Josephine, you are the last person I wanted to leave behind. I dreaded this every day since Mama and Papa's passing."
"You’ve been my first thought every morning. You’ve filled my mind at the most inopportune times, to the point where I could hardly think or work properly."
Her fingers tightened around Josephine’s. "You have been the shining sun in my life, the only thing that’s kept me going."
Josephine caught her breath, her hand suddenly pulling back.
"You make me feel akin to a sunflower," Lucile continued, her eyes softening. "If I were to lose sight of you for too long, my heart would cease to beat, and I would wither away."
"Please forgive me. "
" I was scared of disappointing someone I love so dearly."
Josephine stepped away, her gaze downcast at the soaked grass. A long moment of silence followed, filled only with the sound of the rain and the soft huff from Lady as she shook her head and stomped her hoof.
Thinking any hope of reconciliation was surely gone, Lucile turned to leave, feeling the sting of rejection, Josephine suddenly grabbed her wrist.
"Lucile, wait!"
"In the kitchen’s left cabinet, that’s where we keep the good silver. It’ll fetch a good price."
" I couldn’t- " "Silas would only take his anger out on you for not stopping me."
" Nonsense. "
" We’ll be long gone before he even realizes we’ve left."
