What do you think the main differences are between sora and ven?
That’s a good question! I think they’re both very similar people, but they do have their differences.
Ven matures a lot over the course of BBS, and thus he strikes me as a little more even-tempered than Sora. Sure, he still has his passionate moments, but he’s the one who stops Sora from lashing out at Vanitas in KH3 and addresses him calmly. Of course, he never loses faith in Terra, which is something similar to the kind of faith Sora has in his friends, but he also strikes me as more… realistic, about how people can be. Hence his easier time accepting how Vanitas chooses to be one with the darkness.
While Ven reverts to more childlike behavior around Terra and Aqua, that’s only natural, considering how they’re like surrogate parents/older siblings to him. When he talks to Sora, I get older brother vibes from him, and when he talks to Lea, they joke around like friends and equals. His conversation with Roxas was great too, it was like “hey buddy not bad, you’ve got my approval,” and in that sense, also reminds me of brothers, or even with Ven as a mentor of sorts towards Roxas. Basically, Ven is very aware of the dynamics he has in his relationships with other people, and he adapts his behavior and persona accordingly.
For Sora, he’s more like the younger brother in his relationship with Riku, and Donald and Goofy almost seem like surrogate parents to him. While Ven has Terra and Aqua, for most of his journey during BBS, he was separated from them, and I think that forced him to mature faster. Sora, meanwhile, has better support throughout his journey (and it’s a good thing he does, CoM and DDD are good indications of what will happen to Sora if he loses his support network) and is thus allowed to hold onto his childhood for a little longer. Granted, KH3 brought a screaming halt to that, but it’s not surprising, considering how a major theme in the series seems to be growing up and loss of innocence (especially in KH2 and KH3).
So yeah, Ven, despite the occasional passionate outburst, is more controlled and even-tempered than Sora. He seems to have a more realistic (or cynical, depending on how you see it) view of human nature, considering what he’s been through. It is highly hinted at throughout KH3 that he’s the one spurring Sora into action to save Aqua, so he does have that stubbornness that Sora has, and they both strike me as very emotionally intelligent. While they have their differences, they also share a lot in common, and I hope we get to see more of their friendship going forward.
