“She would follow me all over the yard, finding something to wherever I was working. I was happy to talk to her, and would answer her questions about anything and everything. All the topics you’d call natural science seemed to interest her.“What’s a year?”“That’s the lenth of time it takes for the earth to make one trip all around the sun.”“So I’ve been around the sun five times?”“Right. And you’re almost finished with your sixth.” -Brian Scott, the Ramsey’s gardener
Tomorrow, this little princess would have been 27 years old. Because of someone, to this day we still do not know who, she is forever 6. On Christmas Day 1996, 6 year old JonBenet Ramsey was murdered in her family home in Boulder Colorado. Although she was in many child beauty pageants and was a sucessful model, JonBenet was like any other child. She was your daughter, your granddaughter, your best friend, your kid sister, your kindergarten student, your neighbor down the street. She loved her Samantha American Girl doll and her puppy Jaques. Her daddy was her hero, her mama the prettiest lady she had ever seen. When she grew up, somedays she wanted to be a rockette, others, she wanted to be a pediatritan. Her favorite holiday was Valentines Day. She loved playing in the dirt and often forgot her shoes. She was 6 years old. Even though on August 6th, 1990 she was born, now 27 years ago, she will always be 6 years old.
“Do I have to fall asleep with roses in my hand...Do I have to fall asleep with roses in my hand?”- John Mayer “When You’re Dreaming With A Broken Heart”.
“I loved you completely, and you loved me the same...and the rest..is confetti.”-Nell Crain, (Haunting of Hill House)
JonBenet Ramsey was your daughter, your niece, your pesky sister, your cousin, your 6 year old neighbor, you best friend’s little sister, The girl you played hopscotch and jump rope with at school, your best friend, the little girl sitting on Santa’s lap at the mall. She was an ordinary child, who loved her family and dog Jacques. Her favorite colors were purple and pink. Her favorite holiday was Valentines Day. She had aspirations of being a doctor or nurse “to help people get well”. She liked watching Shirley Temple movies and “Are You Afraid of the Dark”. On her 6th birthday, she received her first and only American Girl doll, Samantha. She loved to dance and stand on her head. She loved life. She was an ordinary child, until the morning of December 26th when she would become the 6 year old beauty pageant princess who was murdered in the basement of her Colorado home, while her parents and brother slept a few floors up. To this day, 22 years later, we know nearly nothing more than we did that cold, bitter December day, maybe we never will. I do know that no matter what the media says about her and her family, JonBenet did love and adore her mom, dad and brother. I hope that they felt the same and that they were the same family we see in all those photographs.
