Therewere voices floating around you, hardly loud enough to hover over the boomingmusic inside of the cluttered and lively bar. You preferred the days when itwasn’t as popular but those are long gone. At least you still have yourfriends—who are drunk and shouting at each other from across the table—andRami, who is quiet and smirking over his glass of whiskey soda.
“How much do you want to bet theyaren’t going to remember this?” He whispers from beside you and laughs when youroll your eyes in response. As if a bet like that could ever be taken seriouslyaround their group of friends.
“Look! Look! They’re doing it again!”
One of your friends shouts andjabs a finger in your direction. You both turn with confused stares and glanceback at each other when their overzealous statement leaves you high and dry.
“Talking?” You murmur.
“Flirting.” They answer around agoofy grin.
You feel your skin ignite with arush of embarrassment and sit a bit straighter before scooting away from Ramiand glaring in their direction. Of course this jackass of a friend wants tothrow you and your stupid crush on Rami under the bus. Only, it’s not really acrush at this point. You spend every bit of free time you have with him, watching movies, hiking, eating out. He holds your hand and laughs at yourstupid jokes. You shared you deepest and most private dreams with him and hetrusted you with his delicate thoughts. Every second that passed, you grew moreand more in love with him.
“Alright, I think that’s enough.”Rami murmured as he tried to pry the glass from your friend’s hands. “No onelikes a drunk that spreads lies.”
“Drunk men tell no lies! You bothwant each other, just kiss already.”
“Shut up.”
He shakes his head and snorts atyour friend’s rude hand gesture before moving towards you again and offeringhis best coy smile. You’re not sure if it’s the lighting the in the room or theembarrassment he must’ve felt hearing that you both wanted each other, but hischeeks were flushed and impossible to miss. Surely, knowing that you liked himwas a travesty on it’s own. Having to find out in the middle of a bar must’vemade it that much harder on him.
You forced your eyes to watch thedrops of condensation that dripped down from your glass and formed a ringagainst the table. Anything but looking directly at him and his enchanting blueeyes. It’s not until you feel his hand find yours under the table and lace hisfingers through yours that you look back at him and hold your breath.
“Wanna get out of here?” Ramioffers softly. “I could walk you home, it’s not a big deal.”
“Can’t just stay for a bit longer?” Your friend breaks throughyour silence and begs through a small pout.
“Ilove sleep and money way too much to waste any more of it on you, loser.”You giggle before getting up and grabbing your coat from the back of the booth.
You go around and kiss them allgoodbye, their previously happy and lively aura simmering down to a drunk andsad stupor. Rami is right behind you, hugging his friends goodbye and promisingto be back around soon.
It’s rare that he ever comes outto bar nights or dinner parties anymore. Not when he’s busy with project afterproject and signing himself up for more anytime you think there will finally bea moment of peace. You don’t blame him though. He’s worked tirelessly at hiscareer since before you’d ever met him and you didn’t expect him to stop now orever. It wouldn’t make sense.
With a few last waves and sloppykisses from your sleepy and drunk friends, you stepped out into the cold airand begin your voyage home. It was still odd to you, walking side by side outin the open when you both were so used to space and distance, but Rami’sfingers always hooked onto yours. Your fingers always laced themselves throughhis and latched on for dear life.
“So,how about our drunk friends being completely stupid, huh?” Rami tries to easethe tension with a laugh and you follow along because god, you’d rather laughabout it than go over it again and again in your head.
“They’rejust a bunch of idiots, but they are ourfriends.” You murmur. “Maybe we’re the idiots for being friends with them.”
“Hmm,maybe.” He falls silent for a second and you feel his hold on your handtighten. You wonder if it’s because of the cold and convince yourself it’s theonly logical explanation. “Or maybe they’re just insanely jealous of how closewe are. Who knows, they could secretlywant you.”
“That’s—notat all what I want.”
“Doyou, you know—okay, this is stupid to even ask but—do you like me?” He whispersgently as if the city around you could hear his every word. “I mean to ask, doyou like me as more than just a few platonic handholds and late night take-outruns?”
Your eyes explored his faceslowly with lashes that beat against chilled cheeks. He was much too pure andbeautiful to look at. You swore it hurt your eyes but you don’t look away. It’salmost like you’re frozen by the very thought of him knowing how you feel butyou don’t know how to escape the question. The truth could lead you tosomething much better than laughing at bad sitcoms and calling each other inthe middle of the night. It could lead to something real but that could just asquickly turn into something dreadful. Hiding behind it would only leave youwith “What if?” and you’re not entirely sure you want that either.
“I—I’m pretty sure I love you, actually.” You whisper breathlessly and feel a rush of warmth spread throughevery inch of your body. You stop completely and force yourself to look at himstraight on. If you were going to tell him the truth, you were going to do itproperly. The bitter freezing air around you was something you almost wanted tomock now. It felt good to say the words aloud, liberating even, and you don’tregret it. Not one bit.
Youstare at each other for a few more seconds before locking lips. It’s sudden andharsh like you’re trying to prove a point and it leaves you both breathless andclinging onto each other. Kissing him like that soothes you in the mostunintelligible way, makes you feel like your soul is out your body, and setsomething off in you that you could never bring yourself to describe.
“I love you too.” Rami whispersagainst your lips when you break apart. Your heart splatters against the floorand shots right back up, past its normal resting place and into your throat. You’d heard the words many times before in your dreams but they could nevermatch up to the real thing.
Youkiss again, slower this time, before the shrill beep that comes from a stoplight nearby tears you apart. Then you just watched the last few numbers countdown and the light flash green with vacant stares. It doesn’t matter. Getting home is no longer a priority. You bring him back down for another swift kiss and melt against him. He’s humming and grasping onto whatever he can hold as if he’ll never have this moment again and you love it. You love him. He’s everything.
Your friends had been right all along, drunk or not. This proves it. Well, this and their shrieks from down the street as they drunkenly charge forward and assert their stance on the matter. You can heard the ‘I told you so’s and the ‘Pay up!’s but you don’t care. It’s like some higher beingis giving you the okay and it makes you snort with laughter before burying yourface into his shirt.
“They’re never going to let us live this down, are they?” You breathe against the fabric and shake your head at the growing laughter.
“Never.”
