"Do I really need to dechlorinate my tap water before adding it to my aquarium?"

Here is 4 different types of water (Deionized a.k.a. Reverse osmosis, distilled, tap, and DI with chlorine added to it) that are being dechlorinated with seachem prime in real time. Each sample has had a chlorine indicator added to it. The pink vials have chlorine present.

I'll be making a full post explaining everything you see later when I have more data.

What are your opinions on tap water for geckos (leos and cresties in particular as I have one of each)? I've been using tap water for a long time and I haven't had any issues but recently someone told me I should be using dechlorinated water or spring water because the chlorine in tap water is bad for them. Is this true?

Dechlorinating is absolutely vital for some animals, like amphibians and fish. In general, reptiles and mammals can handle low amounts of chlorine, but I dechlorinate my tap water anyway, just in case. I use filtered tap water and Prime to dechlorinate.

Partially it depends on your tap water. Some places have higher levels of chlorine and chloramine. A good instant dechlorinator like Prime also binds heavy metals so that they are less dangerous. In addition, if you are doing bioactive you should definitely dechlorinate because invertebrates are more sensitive to chlorine, and you don’t want beneficial bacteria in the soil to be killed.

Personally, I use dechlorinated water in their water dishes, but I use distilled water to mist with. Distilled and R/O water do not need to be dechlorinated. I use it because distilled water will not cause hard water spots on the walls and plants.

To quickly make aquarium items safe after sanitizing with bleach, rinse thoroughly and then soak them in a small container of water that contains at least 5x the standard dose of dechlorinator.

Always sniff test; if you can smell chlorine, it needs more dechlorinator.

For extra safety, let the items dry in sunlight (or UV light) for 24 hours.

I always ‘wash’ my hands with dechlorinator after handling bleach.

So about a month or two ago I noticed that my aquariums were getting more biofilm than EVER. Every tank, every fry jar. It accumulates less than 24 hours after a water change and even happens in NEW water I’ve left to age (or just had extra from water changes and didn’t toss). It’s gross, it makes the water look nasty, and I have to do complete water changes and SCRUB the fry jars every other day instead of just doing partial changes every day and sucking up detritus. It’s slimy and probably prevents proper co2 exchange in the fry jars.

It wasn’t until literal seconds ago as I was writing this that I realized what the culprit could be.

I think this started happening when Chris brought home a different water conditioner. I’ve always used the big bottle of generic Peto brand conditioner because it was cheapest... but Chris brought home Fluval Aqua Plus conditioner about a month ago because they were out of the Pet one.

It says “with herbal extracts stress reducing formula”. I think the Petco one I get has added aloe, but other than that just the regular conditioner chemical.

UGHHHHH.

I bet that’s what it is.

And I just changed all of the tanks.

Kill me. All this time I assumed it was our tap water but our bottles of water in the fridge don’t get it, and they don’t get it when they sit out. It’s only water I’ve added the conditioner to.
