A scene on board His Majesty's ship Deal Castle, Captain J. Cumming, in a voyage from the West Indies in the year 1775, by Thomas Hearne 1804
In 1771, the artist Thomas Hearne accompanied Sir Ralph Payne, the recently appointed Governor General of the Leeward Islands, as his official draughtsman. Payne was recalled after three and a half years in 1775 and Hearne sailed with him back to England. The studies made on this voyage probably formed the basis for this rare scene aboard a Royal Navy ship.
In this scene is Captain James Cumming (left), with his hat under his arm, while the stouter man (possibly wearing a dark rather than blue coat) could be Sir Ralph Payne, hat in hand, or an older lieutenant. However, Cumming (1738-1808) is known to have been 1.88 m tall, so the proportions could be reversed, unless the second figure was actually even taller.
But the large awning is also interesting, as are the cages with the chickens behind the wheel.
