For @fluffyjuly Day 2 - Candlelight and Day 10 - "I adore your hands."
Read on AO3
It was late. Declan knew he should just finish this document and go to bed, but he had gotten distracted by the way his hands looked, the candlelight highlighting every scar and imperfection.
It was strange.
Declan was not a self-conscious man, but now, he couldn’t stop looking at them.
They were not a noble’s hands, or a mage’s hands even, they showed that he liked working with them, liked fighting with them, calloused, scarred, and often blood-stained.
Lost in thought as he was, he didn’t notice Zevran getting up from the bed until his lover wrapped his arm around his shoulder and pressed a soft kiss to his neck.
“Does it bother you?” He turned his hand over for emphasise, showing off the roughness and the scar running down his palm.
“What?” Zevran reached out and took Declan’s hand in both of his, the difference in size making Declan even more nervous.
“Amore, I adore your hands. Big and strong.” He kissed Declan’s neck again.
“Kind, like you.” Quieter, but Declan heard it.
“And always touching me so very well.” More lewd, clearly trying to lighten the mood, and Declan chuckled, before turning to kiss Zevran, his heart lighter.

Neria sighed quietly. Why had she even agreed to this?
Sure, celebrating saving the world made sense, and having a moment together before everyone dispersed to do Maker knew what wasn’t the worst idea, but still. Why a tavern?
It was loud and smelly and there were people everywhere, so it wasn’t like it was just their group anyway.
Morrigan had already disappeared, and Neria really couldn’t blame her, especially now, looking at the rowdy crowd around her.
At least they had secured a table in the corner and she could sit with her back to the wall, but that only made it marginally better.
Her gaze fell on Alim next to her.
He had crawled into Alistair’s lap, smiling and looking besotted, his eyes slightly glazed, one hand playing with Alistair’s hair, the other somewhere under the table, and Neria really didn’t want to think about that.
Alistair was beet red, looking like he was torn between enjoying the attention and being embarrassed about it, and Neria had to try her hardest to suppress an eyeroll.
She would never understand what Alim saw in him, but it was one of the few things she would have to accept. She didn’t like not being able to explain things, but maybe love just wasn’t explainable.
She scoffed. That thought was way too profound for an evening like this.
“Are you alright?” Loghain placed a mug in front of her, her favourite tea judging by the smell, and sat down beside her, effectively shielding her from the drunkards at the next table, and she smiled slightly at him.
“He doesn’t even drink”, she muttered then, looking back at Alim, and Loghain followed her gaze.
“What was that?”, he asked, but she shook her head.
Even if she didn’t understand his behaviour, she wouldn’t give away her friend’s secrets, not even to Loghain.
“I don’t get it”, she said instead, and Loghain grinned slightly.
“No?”, he leaned even closer to her, his arm resting on the back of her chair and his thumb brushing her shoulder, and she felt herself blush. It had never been like this for her, but now even just his proximity made her feel warm all over and her heart skip a beat, and she didn’t know if she liked it or if she was annoyed with herself for constantly loosing her composure just because a man – granted, a wonderful man, smart and interesting and handsome, but still just a man – was interested in her.
“Not that”, she replied. “Just…” She gestured at Alim and Alistair, and Loghain chuckled.
“Making a spectacle?”
“Indeed.” As much as Neria understood more about affection now, she certainly wouldn’t let just anyone see her like that.
Loghain shrugged. “They’re happy. Let them celebrate.”
Neria wrinkled her nose. Surely, you could be happy without all this.
She looked around the bar again, mainly so she wouldn’t have to look at Alim in Alistair’s lap anymore, and her gaze fell on the crowd off to one side. It appeared that someone had cleared a few tables away to make space for dancing, and quite a few people were taking advantage of it, and Neria’s lips pressed together in distaste. Everyone was touching each other, bodies jolting in the crowd and pressing together, and surely they were getting sweaty too, and she could hardly imagine anything worse.
She had easily spotted Declan in the crowd, his fiery red hair and his broad shoulders and tall stature always standing out, and of course Zevran was in his arms, and they were laughing and looking like they were enjoying themselves, because of course something like that was exactly their thing.
“Would you like to dance too?”, Loghain asked, and Neria whipped her head around to stare at him, as incredulous as if he had just said that he was in love with Alistair too.
Then she saw how the corners of his mouth were twitching and the way his sharp eyes were shining with mirth, and she sighed.
“You are messing with me.”
He was grinning outright now. “Am I?”
Neria glanced at the dancefloor again, at everyone occupied and not at all paying attention to them, and leaned in even closer, delighting in the way Loghain’s eyes grew dark at that.
“Yes”, she whispered, then allowed herself to press a soft kiss to his lips, feeling his smile, and perfectly content for a moment, hidden away in their little corner together.
On the dancefloor, Declan was twirling Zevran, then pulled him back into his arms, his hands resting on Zevran’s hips.
They had easily found a rhythm together, and Declan loved it, loved having Zevran so close, loved not having to worry about anything for a moment, laughed being in a crowd, and most of all, loved showing off that they were together.
His hands wandered from Zevran’s hips down to his butt, squeezing slightly, and Zevran laughed.
“Having fun?”
Declan grinned. “What, you aren’t?”
“Of course, amore.” Zevran had his arms wrapped around Declan’s neck, and now he pulled himself up on his tiptoes, and Declan instinctively leaned down to meet him halfway, kissing him deeply, their tongues tangling, a kiss a little too filthy for being in public, but Declan couldn’t care less.
Someone whistled next to them, and Declan pulled back slightly, laughing a little breathlessly.
Zevran’s eyes were sparkling and his lips were red and shiny from kissing, and Declan couldn’t help himself and leaned right back in, kissing him again and lifting him up a little in the process.
Zevran easily wrapped his legs around Declan’s waist, and even more cheers sounded next to them.
“Get a room”, someone shouted, and Zevran laughed against Declan’s lips.
“Do you want to?”, he asked, and Declan considered it for a second, his lips moving from Zevran’s mouth to his neck, intent to leave a mark there, and Zevran moaned, making no effort to keep quiet.
“No just yet”, he murmured. “I want to enjoy dancing for a bit longer.”
“Dancing, but of course.” Zevran’s laugh was warm and joyful, and Declan just basked in the happiness for a moment.
Then Zevran seemed to notice something. “Neria is judging us.”
Declan shrugged as best as he could while still holding Zevran up. Of course she was. He could perfectly imagine the look of disgust on her face without even having to turn around to look at her. “I don’t care. We’re having fun. She should relax for once too.”
“Hm, true.” Zevran pressed a kiss to Declan’s cheek, then he clicked his tongue approvingly. “Well, well, well. I think she is. Our dear Neria just kissed Loghain. In public.”
He made it sound scandalous, as scandalous as Neria no doubt thought it was, and Declan laughed.
“Don’t tell her you saw, or she will never do that again. And we can’t do that to poor Loghain.”
He didn’t really understand what he saw in her, and her in him for that matter, but they had clearly found each other, and Declan was happy for Neria. She was a friend, as difficult as she could be, and he wanted her to be just as happy as he was with Zevran.
“Very true”, Zevran conceded. He lifted his head to look at Declan, and from how he was still hoisted on Declan’s hips, Declan had to lean his head back a little to look him in the eyes, and that send a whole new thrill threw him.
“So, caro mio, dancing?”, Zevran asked then, making the word sound just the right amount of dirty.
“Dancing”, Declan agreed, and dove back in to kiss Zevran again, his heart lighter than it ever had been.

When Declan blinked his eyes open against the sun filtering in through the windows, he first thought he was still caught in a dream.
Zevran was next to him, his eyes still closed, a soft smile on his lips, his hair spilling out over the pillow and gleaming in the early morning sunlight.
It wasn’t an unusual dream.
Managing a Keep, and by extension a whole arling, and dealing with the darkspawn situation on top of it, was exhausting, and Declan still didn’t know if he really had what it took to be a Commander. They had agreed that Zevran needed to go to Antiva while Declan was needed here, but that didn’t mean that it wasn’t difficult and he didn’t miss him terribly.
So of course he would dream about having his beloved by his side again.
Zevran stirred beside him then, and, his eyes still half closed, leaned in for a kiss, and Declan met him halfway automatically. When their lips met, he realised that this was very much real.
Memories of last night came flooding back, and he couldn’t help but smile.
He had just been getting ready to go to bed, his robe neatly folded, his boots next to the door and his staff leaning in a corner, and clad in just loose trousers, he had walked over to the basin in his room – a privilege for the Commander’s chambers – to wash his face, when someone had jumped in through his window
In one swift motion, Declan had grabbed the dagger he had always strapped to his leg, crowding the intruder against the wall, holding their arms over their head with one hand, and the dagger to their neck with the other, magic ready at his fingertips, should the dagger not suffice.
Frowning, because that had been way too easy and the intruder hadn’t put up a fight at all, instead letting Declan manhandle them easily, he paused there, taking them in.
Their hood had come loose, revealing golden hair, elven ears, and a sharp smile.
“Zevran?”, Declan gasped, entirely incredulous. Last he’d known, he was in Antiva, hunting crows, not in his bedchamber, grinning at him.
“Hello, amore”, he replied conversationally, like he hadn’t just bypassed all of the Keep’s security and entered the Commander’s chambers undetected – or nearly undetected, as it was, since Declan’s dagger was currently still pressed against his neck, not that Zevran seemed to mind.
“You could have used the front door and have yourself announced properly, you know?”, Declan said with that thought in mind, and Zevran’s grin turned mischievous.
“Of course, but where’s the fun in that?” His golden eyes were glinting with mirth, and Declan took in their situation once more.
“You like this”, he realised, and Zevran lifted an eyebrow.
“Don’t tell me you don’t?”
He pressed himself marginally closer, as much as Declan’s grip on his wrists and the dagger against his neck would allow, and Declan really couldn’t argue with that.
He dropped the dagger in favour of pulling Zevran even closer, kissing him soundly, all thoughts of asking what he was even doing here forgotten, just focussing on showing his beloved just how much he liked having him back in his arms.
Now, in the light of the early morning, he remembered, and finally asked, and Zevran sighed.
“I know what we agreed. And I have been getting your letters. So, naturally, I worried.”
Declan smiled sadly. “I worried too.”
Zevran nodded. “So here I am.”
“Thank you.” Declan leaned in to kiss him softly, realising just how much he had needed this, needed him.
Reading his letters, deciphering what little they could share in writing and having to trust that he was alright, was one thing, but seeing him, being able to touch him again, was another altogether.
“I’m fine, love”, he said then, not wanting to worry Zevran even more. “I have good people at my side.
Zevran smiled. “I don’t doubt that. Everyone likes you. You make friends easily, no?”
At that, Declan grinned, knowing immediately how to lighten the mood. “There’s even a dashing rogue who tried to kill me.”
“Oh?” Zevran raised his eyebrows, clearly fighting a grin himself. “Should I be jealous?”
“Hm, I don’t know. He is quite handsome. But alas.” Declan sighed, mock-wistful. “I think he has already taken up with another mage.”
“Ah. A pity.” Zevran’s voice was serious, but his eyes were shining with amusement. “It would seem you will have to stay with the original.”
Declan nodded gravely. “A hardship indeed.”
“Is it?” Zevran’s hand travelled down Declan’s chest, then his stomach, slowly inching even lower, and Declan couldn’t stop himself from laughing any longer.
“Not that.” With a chuckle, he added “Yet”, and Zevran dissolved into giggles too.
Still grinning, Declan pulled him into another kiss, tasting Zevran’s joy on his lips.
“I wouldn’t stray”, he whispered then, serious once more, and Zevran hummed against his lips.
“I know, caro mio. I trust you.”
At that, Declan just had to kiss him again, his heart overflowing with happiness.
He knew it wouldn’t last, and they would have to part again all too soon, but he vowed to enjoy this golden morning of bliss to the fullest, committing every laugh, every word, every touch to memory and keeping his beloved in his heart, to get him through the dark times ahead.
Each new day in the tower felt as strange as the last after having tasted freedom, even if only for a little while. It didn’t seem to ruin his attitude, choosing to remember that freedom was possible, and not that being caught seemed enviable time and time again.
At least he could bury himself in his studies. Despite his distaste for the Circle, it was perhaps the only decent education for mages there was. Just having a distraction from where he was motivated him to study.
“Declan!” Anders cried out into the halls before poking his head around the corner, now looking to the familiar face he’d grown up around. “You’re not busy, are you? I have an experiment and could use your help,” his voice spoke of innocence, though a cheeky smile betrayed him, “it’s safe, mostly. I promise.”
Tall, soft, curious Declan Amell. Mostly a healer, asks people too many questions, mother-hens everyone. Alistair’s bf, let him kill Loghain and remain a Warden.
Short, chubby Neria Surana. Very bright, sweet and romantic. Leliana’s gf, spared Loghain and made Alistair and Anora reign together.
Almadeth Brosca, small and stout warrior, kinda foul-mouthed but mother-hens everyone like Declan (she’s a bit more of a harass). Never finished to play with her, I stopped right before fighting Loghain, still don’t know what would I/she have don. And I’m still undecided between having her romance Alistair or Zevran.
I want to try a female Tabris romancing Morrigan one day (when I’m done with the five hundred Inquisitors)
Let's talk about my Amell Warden's facial expressions: his neutral expressions are either concentrated with his lips a bit pursed and kinda squinty eyes, or a curious one with his eyes wide open (chews a bit on the the side of his bottom lip).
He's not one for big toothy smiles, he may grin a bit but his eyebrows do most of the work. Same with angry look, grits his teeth, mouth in a thin line and concentrates all of his expressiveness in his eyes. But only when he's really really angry. Overall just some eyebrow wiggling and squinting.
People have called him inexpressive since forever but he a problem with it until he started romancing Alistair. He was worried he didn't look happy enough when he was around him. So there where a lot of out of the blue hugs, intense/wide eyed stare with firm shoulder squeezings and awkward back patting before they talked about it.
And here's finally my Grey Warden Declan Amell how he's supposed to look like!
I've already made him a Shapeshifter, next is gonna be Arcane Warrior. He's currently romancing Alistair, he's somewhere on the asexual spectrum and he likes way too much to listen to Morrigan and Alistair bickering.
