After a review of the founding of the United States as a republic and not a democracy, Pastor Smith introduces the first of three Puritan doctrines that strongly influenced and shaped the United States Constitution of 1787. The Sovereignty of God is the focus of this week's lesson, as well as pertinent observations about our country's current social and political dilemmas that are eroding our homes, culture, and future as a nation.

A Biblical Perspective on American History, Hillsdale's Midweek Service, June 3, 2026

This is the second in a series on America's history, celebrating the United States' 250th birthday. Pastor Smith offers a perspective on the founding of the United States of America and on the era that shaped the Founding Fathers' views on government. America's founding fathers debated what form of government would shape the nation.

Would the United States be a democracy, in which the rule and authority rest in the hands of the majority? Would the United States be a republic whose laws are made by representatives of the people who must comply with the nation’s Constitution and protect individual rights from the will of the majority?

Pastor Smith asserts that the Declaration of Independence shows that the 56 signers sought to form a democracy; however, the signers of the Constitution of the United States in 1787 established a republic.

Unfortunately, the political leaders of our nation have nearly eroded the great qualities of the republic and the individual liberties we enjoy. Increasingly, it is the tyranny of the liberal majority that is destroying the USA.

The Declaration of Independence - A Covenant of America's Founders

Pastor Smith introduces his Patriotic series for the summer months, celebrating America's 250th anniversary with a brief illustration of the meaning of a covenant, using the Declaration of Independence as an example of a covenant between the fathers of the American Revolution and the thirteen colonies.

For the next several weeks, Pastor Smith will share lessons and insights from American history each Wednesday at 6:25 p.m., including a study of the “Faith of our Fathers” and the documents marking America’s birth—the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States.
