Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is much higher than normal levels. Blood glucose is our primary source of energy and comes from the food we eat.
Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas. Insulin helps break down the glucose in the food to energy usable by cells. Sometimes your body doesn’t make enough—or any—insulin or, the body may not use the produced insulin effectively.
When this happens, the glucose stays in your blood and remains unused by your cells.
Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause health problems.
