There isn't a god. when you take Isaac up to the mountain, lay him across the altar, hold the blade above him; there will be no angel to call your name; to stop you; to declare it was all a test. The knife will fall and you will call yourself justified.
I've spent the time studying the bible; and I know that these aren't true. It condemns homosexuality. it condones slavery. it condones genocide. it condones the killing of unbelievers. Sometimes in the back of my mind, I fear that the people I know will look a little closer and follow what the bible actually says. And in the front of my mind, I fear those who follow it just enough to try to justify their bigotry.
There is a class, a category of people - those that follow their religion as truth, and are willing to do whatever it tells them, even if it commands things that would be evil and disgusting to a non-believer.
There are millions, maybe billions of these people. Some of them are homophobes. Some of them are murderers. Some of them are gay-affirming. Some of them are your friends. Some of them are world leaders. Some of them are your family.
The only way we can end religious violence is by condemning these people wholesale. The 9/11 attacks, the Crusades, Sharia Law, and more were caused by people believing lies. A liar is a liar and liar who denies truth and reality cannot be trusted to self-regulate and make sure their lies aren't truly in reality harmful.
not every religious person is one of these people. Some of them follow it as cultural practice, some of them are agnostic theists, some hold their religion as a hope rather than a fact. Some people observe pikuach nefesh and never let their belief override the value of a human life. But is the duty of every person to ensure that the difference between them and Heaven's Gate cultists is more than just luck, environment, and a lack of follow-through.
Chronically online atheists will claim they are more moral and intelligent than religious people while using ableist and racist-coded language like “schizophrenic” and “primitive” to describe religious people. While they ignore the fact that science has also been used to harm marginalized people. Lack of religion doesn’t make you inherently more tolerant or ethical. It just means you can be an asshole for different reasons.

Many former Christians and people who primarily have Christianity as a point of reference for what religion is do need to learn that Christianity is a highly orthodoxic religion - that is to say, it emphasizes correct belief. However, some religions are more orthopraxic - they emphasize correct practice.
Orthopraxic religion isn't necessarily rigidly inflexible in what's considered the correct way to practice things, and orthodoxic religion can be pretty strict about the proper way to perform its rituals. But within an orthopraxic religion, you don't necessarily have to believe that the gods actually exist or exist in a certain way in order to be considered part of it. There's nothing specific that you must believe in your heart. You just have to participate in its rituals and practices, whatever those are.

I understand having church hurt but I'm going to say something that is a hot take but really shouldn't be: if you are traumatized by a religion, it is YOUR responsibility to process that trauma and overcome it so that you don't become a hateful, spiteful, bitter bitch.
And I'm saying that as somebody that had a bunch of church hurt and became a bitter bitch and now, 7 years of deconstruction and study of biblical theology later, have processed almost all of my religious trauma and now no longer consider myself traumatized by the church.
If your take on Christianity is "it oppresses minorities" then I'm going to assume that you haven't done any in depth study of Biblical theology beyond a surface level reading of the Bible in it's non-native language.
That's not to say that the Church hasn't committed atrocities. They absolutely have, as a pagan and an indigenous mixed person, I am ACUTELY aware of that. But what the Church has done, for centuries, is take religion and twist it into something it's not.
The Bible affirms women.
The Bible affirms queer people.
The Bible affirms BIPOC individuals.
The Bible affirms pagans and witches.
The Bible affirms poor folk and the abused.
Actually STUDY. Please I beg you, because true and honest, genuine Christianity is genuinely so fucking beautiful.
