I signed up to do the @ruinart challenge in Dallas in July a few weeks ago. It’s 4 wines from anywhere in the world. I’m sure there are some they won’t consider, but it’s the ultimate deductive/blind tasting. 4 wines and 40 minutes to identify and answer questions about each of them. Took 33 minutes to go through the flight. 4 more minutes than would have been allowed for a 7 wine flight. I hit 25 minutes as I was starting wine 6. We get a total of 25 minutes to do a flight of 6 so I would have had to crush the first 5 to pass an exam. Of the 7 wines I would have only pass one. I got it for the most part. Called Chianti Classico Riserva and it was Brunello. The rest not so much. But all of them in hindsight were absolutely great examples. My descriptors were mostly on point, with a few kind of in left field and that’s where I failed. It was the first time I had done a full flight like this in months. And only the second time I’ve even done a tasting in person since December. Lots of work to do. A disconnect between theory and my palate. Both are there. It’s the common failing of many people who are describing the wine but not seeing what defines the wine.
