New album - King of the Forest!

June 21, 2019 – New Album – King of the Forest Hello friends! We are really excited to announce the release of our new album ‘King of the Forest’! check out the art…

King of the Forest’s artwork was created by Morgan Rider.

For Deep Dark River, this is the second album for the project. But as a duo, this is our first! When I (Morgan) returned from tour across Canada in October 2018, I had written the bulk of the music which was to become King of the Forest. I had already been speaking with cellist Nathen Morrison for some time about becoming involved with the project, so this was the perfect way to introduce him properly. Additionally, this album will also be the first album in a quadrilogy of albums we are planning to release throughout 2019 and 2020. As I type this, I already have most of the drums, guitars and pianos recorded for album number three! More on that later… King of the Forest is also the first album I will be releasing on my own record label ‘North Soul Records’. I plan to use this label to release all future solo and DDR material. Very cool! New single – STARFIRE Hey everyone, We are very happy and excited to announce the release of our brand new single STARFIRE! Listen to the new single on Spotify HERE or on Bandcamp HERE! Starfire combines an acoustic guitar with cello, piano and voice for a very simplistic, yet haunting composition. This is the first single from our upcoming album. Since the fall of 2018, Nathen and I have been working away semi-quietly on what is going to be the first album in a four-album quadrilogy. The first album (due this summer) will be about an ancient woodland guardian’s fall from the heights of power and majesty while witnessing the fall of his sylvan realms. The focus of these albums is to talk about climate change while focusing on four particular legendary north American animals and their particular threatened habitats. In the coming months we will reveal more music, more artwork, tour plans and the album itself. New Deep Dark River album coming!

I would like to formally announce that starting this summer, I will release what will be the 1st album in a 4-part/ 4 album “Deep Dark River” quadrilogy!

This beautiful sunset on the north shore of Lake Superior that I photographed last summer was a major catalyst in the creation of these next Deep Dark River albums.

I had dreamt up many unique ideas in my solo music travels that I had either written down or recorded only to be put aside for the dust to settle upon…

As I sat there on the shore of Lake Superior with a beer in my hand (obviously a Town BreweryBetween Night and Day white stout!) feeling the cold wind come from across the lake, I began to mentally organize everything I had been passively working away on for years. 

These 4 albums will all fit together to create the Deep Dark River Quadrilogy – a musical journey that will traverse 4 unique soundscapes of varying instrumentations. My love of all music, Canadiana, folklore, mythology and nature will become together in this 4 album series.

I am very excited to begin unveiling all of my hard work that spans back over the last 5 years. The inspiration I had comes from travelling all over North America, Europe and the UK; meeting many amazing people, spending time in many beautiful places and living my life to the fullest extent possible.

The dream is beginning to be realized and I could not have even begun to think about doing this if it weren’t for all of the beautiful people in my life and that I have met or have supported me along the way. 🍁🦌🐋🦅🐺 As of right now – Thursday, February the 21st – most of the next album has been recorded. Guitars are complete, vocals are complete. The next pieces of this puzzle are the cello parts, piano parts as well as the mix and master. A CRIMINAL MIND!

Hey folks,

I’ve been a bit quiet since returning from my west coast tour – thus concluding my touring activity for 2018! It’s been a busy year building this project from nothing and playing as many cool places as I could get to.

Since I’m on the subject, I would like to thank – from the bottom of my heart – all of the amazing people, breweries, distilleries, restaurants, pubs, music venues, festivals and shops for having me play and hosting me for their events during my tours across Canada this year. I had an incredible time, met many amazing people, drank many delicious brews & spirits as well as saw some incredibly beautiful places.

This year also marks the year I became a father. Yes, I brought my wife Hannah and our daughter Ava on the road for adventures and family time as well. Best decision we have ever made!

Since we returned from the west coast, I immediately sank my teeth into a song I’ve been meaning to cover since I started Deep Dark River…

He’s my metal band’s drummer’s Dad, he’s a world-renowned rock star, singer/ pianist for Styx and my other band Vesperia jams in his basement once a week…

A criminal mind

I covered A CRIMINAL MIND by Mr. Lawrence Gowan! The first time I heard this song was when I was between the ages of 2 and 4 – and it’s been ingrained in my memory ever since. That haunting, beautiful piano melody ringing out is an unmistakable trademark of Gowan’s – creating a melodic focal point that breathes a different kind of life into his music. I knew an acoustic version would be perfect for what I am trying to express with Deep Dark River.
