Ooc question: are there any notorious criminals in the paranormal community?
I’ve talked about Mother’s Hand, an organized crime group active from 05-45, led by Rebecca “Big Beck” Jones, a lycanthrope, witch, and notorious criminal.
I’ve mentioned things like Deep Fathom, Sons of Silicon, things like the rogue wizard Mnemnus (I think, tumblr mobile is failing me). I’ve had inter dimensional visitors like Thrashwizard Molorov and Roadqueen Gwyneviere Invictor from the realms of Rhythmorvax and Albion Dieselsands respectively who are still at-large in the canon. (I hope I can develop those ideas a bit more later on.) I’d love to fill out the cast a bit more in that way - the setting’s roots as a TTRPG still make me want to have a rotating cast of antagonists of various levels and origins.
I’d love to start working on more defined storylines involving some of these characters - the question is the avenue.
What's the deal with Deep Fathom? It sounds like you've had trouble with them before. Do they often feed unsuspecting restaurant-goers questionably sourced seafood?
Hah, no. That’s actually one of their weirder operations. Couldn’t say what the end goal was, beyond the usual.
Deep Fathom Security Technologies is technically a private military contractor operating out of a series of small island nations in the Pacific.
They utilize a range of ontomorphic techniques, materials, and methods in their work, but are most widely known for using Outsider based methods. Through means not understood by the Office, they can manipulate Outsider entities and phenomena to help their operations. They’ve been around since the 1970s, but have been barred from officially operating in the US since the end of Operation Deep Whisper.
That doesn’t really stop them, unfortunately. They often operate behind cutouts or through proxies. We think that some operations are an effort to weaken local reality enough that their techniques are easier to perform - as our Shoggoth eater found out.
The way The Circle Of Yellow is named, i have to wonder.
Are there other circles with different goals and gods?
There are other Outsider groups, but none with the same naming convention. It's a little...difficult to put a name to a lot of them. Outsider cults tend to rise and fall pretty quickly, partially because of the nature of their beliefs, and because the Yellow Circle is the biggest name in town. It's a common saying among those beliefs that the Forbidden Amber Monarch has "laid claim" to Earth and its associated realspace, but we haven't found any reason to assume that's true.
The only one that's hung in there is Deep Fathom Security Technologies, and they're a...special case.
I READ A BOOK: Deep Fathom by James Rollins
Actually I read it like a week ago...but I'm lazy and couldn't find the energy for this. Today I feel guilty so here I am, LoL.
The writing was as good as always with Rollins. Interesting and high paced.
There were lots of character and all very well characterized, just as the protagonists and if THAT is not amazing to you I don't know what to say.
The story was crazy, practically sci-fi but still got that feeling like it was somehow making sense...like it was possible. Not the ending, that was so sci-fi and that's way I freaking LOVED IT, but still, I didn't see it coming until I did. Well played, James!
Little personal note: the 'bad guy' in this book had a HUGE part! He appeared immediately in the beginning and there was a lot of his point of view and that was interesting to me. He was clearly the villain but still you could be inside his evilness and...don't know, just cool.
Finally I have to say: this time I almost liked the girl more than the boy between the protagonists and it's not usual for me! Karen was a badass of a Canadian anthropologist! Jake Kirkland is hot mess and like...superman and batman mashed together. You gotta love him, and I do.
All in all I think I loved Altar of Eden a little more, but more for the setting (because LOUSIANA...and honestly the male protagonist because he was so good! Another Jack by the way...I guess with Rollins if it's a JACK it's gotta be GOOD.)
Even like this, this is a 4.5/5 stars book.
Go read it if adventure, badassness and tropical paradides are your thing!
Good read!
FINALLLY finished Deep Fathom.
It was slow to start with, I really didn't get into it until the book was almost over, but then I couldn't put it down.
Now on to the next!
Books I've Read This Year (PT 3)
Deep Fathom - James Rollins
My opinion:
Holy mother of god do I love this author. I am only missing a couple of his books. I swear to god, he is one of my favourite authors. Each book is an adrenaline rush! So, this book was just as amazing, keeping me riveted at every damn turn of the page and making me wonder what was going to happen!!! It also introduced one of my favourite characters from the Sigma series that he writes, and brings up a whole slew of questions. I just, damn. Seriously, go check out his books. Now. For stand alone's I suggest Amazonia or Excavation. If you want an awesome series that keeps going strong with amazing characters that you will fucking fall in love with! Start with Sandstorm and get initiated into Sigma. Now go! Read! And if you already like this writer, message me so we can geek out about him.
