The oldest deer contest in Texas celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. That’s quite a milestone from its humble beginnings in 1965 at the Center Circle Gas Station—a Texaco station—located in Freer, Texas. At that time Leonel “Muy” Garza was the station manager and started the contest with only one division, widest spread. The category was appropriate for the time because the Boone & Crockett scoring system had not really gained popularity among hunters. However, killing a buck with a spread over 20 inches was the benchmark back then. Homer Garza was the lucky winner the first year, and with no prize to be had, Muy simply gave him a wristwatch, which had been a gift from the Texaco Company. The contest was born and has been going strong ever since.
