Rewatching BSG it strikes me again how good Saul Tigh is in command when there is a crisis in the moment. He saves the ship multiple times by either making the hard call or the right gut call. His biggest issue is that his good decision-making only extends to a moment because after that it immediately leads to martial laws and poisoning cups.
