Today, I wish I had one of these... (Richard Grosser)
Vintage Def Leppard 1992 Band T-Shirt! Rock! Medium!
Let me say this, One Direction is NOT getting sued or having charges pressed against them jfc. Def Lappard's say on the whole Midnight Memories and Put Sugar On Me- "However, guitarists Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell have told Billboard that they are not launching a lawsuit and that the songs are only "very similar in structure". "The chords are one-four-five," Campbell said. "Those are the blues. You don't get more basic than that. I think what's more reminiscent of the Leppard thing is the production, the sound, the vocals, the reverb and the way it's assembled. "That is very flattering that all of a sudden these kids think it's a cool sound. I think a lot of people of their generation aren't going to connect their music to ours." Collen stated that the close similarities are not on a par with the controversy surrounding Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' and Marvin Gaye's 'Got To Give It Up'. "That's different," he said. "In fact it's got the mayonnaise jar and people hooting in the background which Marvin Gaye had. I don't see that you can do that. The One Direction one is very similar in structure, but it's all good."
Five sublime musical collaborations
Def Leppard and Hothouse Flowers - 'From The Inside'; a tender, haunting calumny to addiction. Probably Joe Elliott's most mature lyrics...not that that is saying much. Sadly I can find no trace of a live performance of the song anywhere online.
Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan - 'Ramblin' Man'; in truth any song that Campbell and Lanegan have recorded together is stunning but the charm of their most well-known duet lies in the call-and-response of Lanegan's bourbon-drenched vocals admitting his vice for restlessness and Campbell's whispered, seductive persuasion to stay.
Manic Street Preachers and Ian McCulloch - 'Some Kind of Nothingness'; Manic Street Preachers are famous for their duets with female voaclists (Lords, Persson, Minogue) but the fact that Echo and the Bunnymen were heroes of the formative Manics so for Bradfield and McCulloch to duet together lends Nothingness a neat biographical, as well as musical, resonance. Usually, Bradfield's singing style is effusive and emphatic; while McCulloch's is effortless, almost lazy and disinterested. And though Bradfield is relatively restrained (a choral backing in the song's coda provides the bombast here), McCulloch plays it entirely straight. Comfortably the best song on the Postcards From A Young Man album.
David McAlmont and Bernard Butler - 'Yes'; an obvious choice, yes, but also unequivocally justified. The performance on Later...With Jools Holland with a live string accompaniment is one of the show's all-time greatest. McAlmont's vocal range is astonishing while Butler's guitar virtuosity remains, oddly, under-appreciated and overlooked.
Gruff Rhys, Boom Bip, Cate le Bon (Neon Neon) - 'I Lust U'; cards on the table time: Gruff Rhys is as close to musical genius as you will find. There. I said it. Super Furry Animals have long had an electronic side to them, with Cian Ciaran the main protagonist within the band. However gruff teaming up with Boom Bip was tantalising once news broke they were collaborating. This 80s infused, Human League-esque track was the lead single, and best song, on the Neon Neon debut album and is astonishingly catchy. It is Cate Le Bon's mesmeric vocals that top thnings off and lend a human touch to the electronic sheen underneath. The song works in a (comparatively) stripped down style too
