#Repost @rising_majority ・・・ The Rising Majority lifts up Oluwatoyin “Toyin” Salau, the ninteen year old activist who fought for Black lives before her murder last week. Toyin’s death, and the sexual abuse she suffered during her life, remind us that we must work to end all forms of violence, from police violence to the violence in our homes. Patriarchal violence happens throughout the world, encompassing many forms of abuse, and is rooted in and operates in support of patriarchal structures. This violence can be verbal, psychological, economic, physical, or sexual. It can be perpetrated by anyone and directed toward anyone, but is usually directed toward women, children, and LGBTQI folks. Patriarchal violence can range from teasing to gaslighting to murder. Black Women's Blueprint found through a national survey that, like Toyin, over 71% of Black women and girls face sexual violence before their 18th birthday. We owe it to Toyin, to all the others whose lives were cut short by this violence, and to those currently experiencing it, to end patriarchal violence in our fight for Black lives.
