Zelda’s mouth widened in an exaggerated ‘O’ of surprise. Amongst the impromptu festivities, she had managed to completely forget their standing appointment. And now she was plastered in front of the man around who she always tried her hardest to keep up appearances.
“Forgive me, your Excellency, it somehow slipped my mind” she said thickly. That wasn’t the only thing slipping; one of Zelda’s legs seemed to fold out from underneath her and she started to slide down towards the floor, only stopping when Faustus managed to grab her. She blinked, smiling blithely as she made a half-hearted attempt to straighten herself up again.
“I think you know that I would never want to risk the Dark Lord’s displeasure” she proclaimed, far too grandly for a woman who was currently devoting the majority of her energy to remaining upright, and jabbed her index finger in the High Priest’s shoulder to underscore her point, barely noticing his slightly incredulous expression.
Zelda led her visitor into the house, glancing at the stairs up which she would usually have escorted him. There was no way on Satan’s earth she was going to get all the way up there in her current state, at least not without an extreme amount of embarrassment. They made their way past the parlour door, winding through to the mortuary office, and Zelda couldn’t restrain a little chuckle. “I imagine I’m safe in assuming that you don’t wish to greet the rest of my family.”
