On this day, 30 years ago, Slayer released their undisputed masterpiece Reign in Blood. This album is legendary. This album has influenced so many bands. The entire genre of Death Metal is practically based on this album. It pushed music to the extreme, and pushed heavy metal to even faster realms. It instantly became a classic, and really put Slayer on the map of heavy metal and cemented them as one of the Big Four of Thrash Metal (along with Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth). I cannot say enough kind things about this album. The riffs are lightening fast (the albums average speed is 220 beats per minute), the drums are heavy and groovy, and the vocals are demented. Lyrically, it's might not be the best. It isn't highbrow stuff. It's generally cliche heavy metal lyrics. Horror and satanic imagery galore. But those lyrics are still fun to listen to. Standout tracks are "Raining Blood", "Angel of Death", "Altar of Sacrifice" (my personal favorite), "Criminally Insane", and "Postmortem." Although all of the songs are incredible! LUNCH. Method Man and Mary J. Bilge singing "You're All I Need" out of Grandma Ruby's old cassette player/recorder (just got it fixed!). Grandpa Ed, Ruby's husband, worked for General Electric for years. Invented the electric blanket with a team of other engineers. Never really knew grandpa Ed...but we both loved Michael Jordan obsessively in the early nineties apparently.
