They called her angel,

convinced her she had wings and could fly.

Waited until she was soaring,

before turning shooting her from the sky.

They strung flame tipped arrows,

laughing as she spiraled downward.

Wings charred black and bones bruised,

they told her that she should just stay down.

Though feeling broken and lost,

with shaking legs she got to her feet.

They stared at her as she stood before them,

defiance in her eyes.

The years added to those bruises,

new wounds opened over old scars.

There were days when it poured,

nights where if felt as though the darkness was suffocating her.

Then there came a day,

that when she breathed it was fresh air.

Her world stopped spinning,

at last she stood on solid ground.

Though those voices still remain,

haunting her darkest dreams.

New voices have risen to challenge,

giving her renewed strength.

Perfect message for my birthday because I don't often give myself enough credit. Today is not only the day I was brought into this life, it was also the day I started dialysis back in 1996. I was just turning 17 and I'll never forget Dr. Mary Jo Voelpel coming into my hospital room and telling me I wouldn't live to see age 20. Here I am, 24 years later, turning 41. To be honest, I wasn't sure I'd see 20 either but God has a purpose for me that is much bigger than my tiny mind can wrap itself around. My life is not without challenges, but whose is?! All I know is that I am blessed more than most and you know what? I finally believe that I deserve it!
