Dundee, 22.5.14
On the 22nd of May the ‘creative crew’ as Anna has nicknamed us, set off to Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design degree show. While there, we were amazed by every artists different interpretation of the world around us and what they believe to be art, one of my favourites being Kate Cunningham’s work. Her cloud paintings were stunning. So realistic. It felt as if we could get lost staring up at them. Once we had seen all the fine arts students works we were taken to GeneratorProjects, an art gallery that is run voluntarily. There we saw some amazing pieces of art including a strange interpretation of a saint’s story, as part of a yearly exhibition called They Had Four Years. Every year, for this slot, Generator Projects in Dundee showcases new talent from art schools across Scotland. Hand-picked by the gallery’s committee, the selected artists represent the very finest of last year’s graduating students. Some of this years committee had been out that day looking at the degree show like us, but to pick out next years exhibitors. This year those on show reflected a real variety of different mediums and ideas, with photography, film, sculpture and installation, all showcasing their different ideas and interpretations on belief. Katherine, one of the committee members, showed us round the space and talked not only about the individual artworks on show but also how the committee functions and makes exhibitions happen. It was inspiring. She gave us some good advice for talking about our own work when we come to display it in August. Ellen
