A video in collaboration with Fergus Wood from Harvest skateboard co who filmed and edited this film of me and Grant skateboarding as an installation piece for my up and coming degree show.  When finished the hour long performance marks were left on the wall; effectively drawing with our skateboards.

Documentation of the plinth/pole jam sculpture in the gallery space after being skated on.

Documentation of the plinth/pole-jam sculpture idea and creation. The idea being that the plinth when placed horizontally can be used as a skate obstacle but then when placed vertically it looks like a typical plinth with a sculpture coming out the end. Creating works with more than one purpose and clear signs of use.

The sole purpose of the Jersey barrier is to regulate and control traffic; ironically they give skateboarders the opportunity of movement and power. Above are images of a sculpture i built replicating the concrete road side jersey barriers. In this case the barrier is mimicking the original purpose and has been made out of wood instead of concrete; materials are re-arranged to turn this urban structure into a sculpture with no strength in use. The other sculptures have been deigned from influence of the urban environment and other skate obstacles to serve a purpose where as this is just a replica of an already existing object. The reason why this piece was not skated on  The barrier sits in-front of the marks from the 'wall-riding' as if the barrier is trying to control freedom.

This video documents my social experiment 'control'. The idea was to explore the relationship between skateboarders/skateboarding in a traditional gallery environment. I was no longer a skateboarder but an artist directing skateboarding. I did not like the feeling of being on a different side from the skateboarders. It was interesting to see how the skateboarders reacted as not one of them was a student at the art college. The skaters seemed to find being in a university daunting however seemed to be excited at the idea of making their mark in a place they would not normally be allowed to use- acting more aggresive almost. Personally I felt anxious and could not relax because I felt in charge of a large group of skaters and the damage they may cause. The most interesting thing I realised was when leaving the building to go skate in the streets all of those anxious feelings left me and I became a skateboarder again acting the same as the rest of the skateboarders. When removing the ramps from the wall you are left with a beatifully masked work of wheel marks. I plan on recreating this social/interactive community vibe of skateboarding in my degree show. Skateboarders will skate on one part of the wall in my space to leave a sign of useage- leaving their urban mark in the exhibition space. Filmed by Pyrate Pete- Dundee November 2013

Skateboard graphic commissioned by Harvest Skateboards. Released summer 2014. The design was taken from a series of paintings depicting how I would interpret the urban environment on my skateboard. The light brown texture you see is where the wood grain from the deck will be.

FOUR DAYS X FOUR YEARS

Exhibition opening this Saturday 1st March 2014 at Generator Projects, Dundee.

Generator Projects take-over by seven Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design students in their fourth and final year. Exhibiting a range of work from each multimedia installation artist, expanding the boundaries of material usage, form and visual making in a fresh and interactive show.

Ramp structures used (skated on), painted and then turned on their side to become gallery space sculptures. These sculptures which have enabled skaters to make marks on the wall now stand encouraging people to consider space and movement. The structures which created sporadic interaction are now controlled and given a new purpose.

I recently booked the white space in art school so that I could experiment with turning a gallery space into a social/interactive space inspired by skateboarding and subculture. I made two ramps and I invited skaters in to see what would happen. Themes regarding contrast between control and freedom were explored.

I was sent a video of my film playing in the 'Accelerate' exhibition gallery space. This was the first time I had seen the gallery space and where my film was placed. I am very, very happy with the space and still can't believe my luck. Thank you internet, Tumblr, hash-tags, Mhairi Gowans, North Carolina Museum of Art, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dunfermline and Skateboarding!

I was sent images of my film 'Skate Scape' being played in the exhibition 'Accelerate' at the North Carolina Museum of Art. The photo's look really exciting, it's just very unfortunate and upsetting that I can't afford to go over to America for the opening and to see the place.
