Johannes Vermeer from “100 Great Artists” by Charlotte Gerlings. Born in #delftholland in 1632, #johannesvermeer painted historical and religious subjects in the 1650s. The Dutch school of the 17th century produced, in effect, a documentary of every aspect of their daily lives. Each painter had his specialty, from tall ships to dead pheasants. #vermeer was chiefly concerned with interiors and with one room in particular. It features in so many of his carefully composed works, lit from the left by two windows, it has a tiled floor and one map-hung wall. 1) #girlwithapearlearring (c. 1665) The unknown girl is dressed oriental-style in a turban, which means that the picture is probably a tronie, or character study. 2) The Astronomer (1668) This painting reminds us that Vermeer lived in an age of scientific discovery. #famousartists #dutchartist #dutchart #theseventeenthcentury #worldart #arthistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CSKhD10L6n7/?utm_medium=tumblr
