my first reaction was 'oh my god he is SUCH an asshole' but then he really digs into how he's feeling and wonders if he's a bad person and thinks of how he'd feel if power or aki or makima were dead and concludes he'd probably be okay as long as his basic needs are met which is rly interesting because he simultaneously craves intimacy and closeness with such a desperation but he also has this intense disconnect from other people due to a childhood of hardship so it's like his own emotions have calcified bc of his trauma...I don't think he's cried at all yet, even if he was sad to lose pochita.

so it's less that he's a shitty person on purpose or out of malice - in fairness, he barely even knows aki - and more that he's just not very good at recognizing what he wants or becoming emotionally close to people....I actually really appreciate this honesty and realism. you can't control how you feel, and your history might have led your emotional response to be self-interested or unemphathetic. that doesn't mean you can't still choose to be caring or compassionate, but denji sinply isn't interested in that, or doesn't seem so. and his lack of emotional intelligence prevents him from seeking out what he truly wants as well....many such cases!
