Hoodoo Man Blues is the debut album for blues singer and harmonica player, Junior Wells. He’s partnered with Buddy Guy on guitar, Jack Myers on bass and Bill Warren on drums. On early pressings Buddy Guy was credited as Friendly Chap as he was under contract with Chess Records at the time. The quality of the recording is the thing that grabs you first. It sounds like you are sitting right there in the recording studio with them. There’s a space between every instrument and Well’s vocals that makes them pop. It truly sounds unlike other blues records. However, that space doesn’t diminish the band’s power. Captured on the record is 12 outstanding tracks of true Chicago blues. Well’s impassioned singing and killer amplified harmonica riffs and Buddy Guy’s nimble guitar work is on full display. Not to mention Myers and Warren laying down one solid blues groove after another. For example, there’s the rousing opener Snatch It Back and Hold It, the slow blues jam of The Wee Wee Hours and the swinging title track. The later of which features Guy playing through a Leslie speaker which sounds fantastic. If you have even a passing interest in blues, you need to check this record out.

Delmark recording artist Luther Allison (R.I.P.) performing at our bar in Chicago, Biddy Mulligan’s, circa 1980. Sometimes the whole band would stay at our apartment and then we’d go to Evanston’s old Main Cafe on Chicago Ave for hash browns and onions. Luther Allison (August 17, 1939 – August 12, 1997) was an American blues guitarist. He was born in Widener, Arkansas, although some accounts suggest his actual place of birth was Mayflower, Arkansas. Allison was interested in music as a child and during the late 1940s he toured in a family gospel group called The Southern Travellers. He moved with his family to Chicago in 1951 and attended Farragut High School where he was classmates with Muddy Water's son. He taught himself guitar and began listening to blues extensively. Three years later he dropped out of school and began hanging around outside blues nightclubs with the hopes of being invited to perform. Allison played with the bands of Howlin' Wolf and Freddie King, taking over King's band when King toured nationally.
