Why Every Retail Company Is Poised for Transformation

Condé Nast and Deloitte Digital have teamed up with leading specialists on Digital Transformation to present Connecting in the Digital Age, a series that will provide an insider’s look at a framework for Digital Transformation, and how it’s been applied across industries and around the world. See how no two transformations are alike, but each shares a…
My first agency visit as an M-School student was to Deloitte Digital, and the experience was nothing short of my expectations. Located in Manhattan beach, this firm takes innovation to a new level.
Innovation is defined as the creation of a new, viable business offering.
Unlike invention, which is coming up with something new, innovation must drive value for the consumer. You can invent something that provides absolutely no value to society; however, it takes true innovation to make something useful and appealing to others.
We also learned about the Ten Types of Innovation, a framework coined by Jay Doblin, who is best known for his work related to design systems and applied design concepts. Below is an infographic listing the Ten Types of Innovation:
The first three Types are listed as “Configuration”, meaning they should capture the value of the products. Numbers four and five are “Offering”, meaning they should create value for the customer. Lastly, the “Consumer Experience” part aims to engage customers in a differentiating way to really deliver the value a product or company has to offer.
These Ten Types are not mutually exclusive, nor should a company try to hit all of them. However, it’s interesting to see that most of the successful companies hit multiple -- truly showing that configuration, offering, and consumer’s experience should all be equally considered when trying to innovate a product, service, or whole company.
Although we didn’t discuss this company during the presentation, I found that Uber is extremely innovative in many ways. Here are four out of the Ten Types (definitely not all of them, by the way):
Profit Model: Uber obviously makes a huge profit while still being able to pay their drivers. They also have “surge pricing” in areas with high demand, incentivizing more drivers to “chase the surge” and level out the amount of people in the area that need rides.
Product Performance: There have been so many upgrades to Uber in the recent past: a more intuitive app design, individual customization of what color the driver’s Uber light is, compatibility with Venmo, etc. They seem to be constantly thinking of ways to improve their services!
Product System: Not only does Uber have the transportation app, they also have Uber Eats (another favorite of college students). You can hop into your Uber, order an Uber Eats to arrive at the time you get home, and hop out of the Uber to pick up the Uber Eats right outside your doorstep. Not only does Uber dominate the transportation realm, they also do in food delivery.
Channel: When Uber was brand-new, it was such a non-traditional channel for how to get transportation. They really revolutionized the taxi game -- no more unsuccessful flagging down, or having to call days in advance for an airport shuttle! While the idea of getting into a random stranger’s car by myself terrified me at first, I now order one and hop in like it’s second nature.
Brand: Uber as a brand is recognizable and used in so many major cities in the United States (and worldwide). There’s even a song about it! They directly compete with Lyft, another giant company in the tech/transportation industry. But I’m not seeing Lyft Eats anywhere -- just saying
Some companies only focus on two or three and can still be successful. However, no matter how many of the Ten Types a company chooses, they have to continue to look for ways to innovate. While the Ten Types are a framework, they should never be the end-all to a company’s additional innovation, even in the future. In this way, innovation is a cycle that should never be forgotten about.
When my group applied these Ten Types to the brand we’ve decided to develop, we (thankfully) opened up Pandora’s Box of ideas. Not only were we coming up with new channels for our product system and playing with different profit models -- we were forced to look for deeper issues we could aim to solve with our products. The Ten Types were like a breath of fresh air because it forced us to see our products and ideas from ten different perspectives than our own. The presentation concluded with a sixty-second elevator pitch, which challenged us to pick our best ideas (and consequently rethink the ones we decided to leave out).
My biggest takeaway of the evening was to “focus on innovation as a discipline, rather than just a creative brainstorm.” This was a very impactful quote because I often get down on myself whenever I’m in a creative rut. By treating innovation as a discipline, I can learn to effectively use my creativity. The Ten Types of Innovation are a nice tool to help focus my thoughts, especially regarding my group’s first project!
Of course, I would like to extend my thanks to Danny Ledger and Giannelle Veis for being such amazing speakers and making this information accessible for the students within the M-School. I will definitely take these Ten Types of Innovation wherever I go throughout my college and professional career!

From the internet of things to the sharing economy, digital trends are once again setting many large, established companies back on their heels. But neither new competitors nor mounting pressure represent the biggest threat in today’s dizzying digital environment. According to the “2016 Digital Business Global Executive Study and Research Project,” conducted by MIT Sloan Management Review and Deloitte Digital, the most significant peril large enterprises face is their own organizational inertia.
