KO catches Hao Mei wincing when Xiao Nai announces that Wei Wei won’t be going on the lunch runs anymore. They all knew this was coming after her penchant for attracting trouble. He tried to send Hao Mei a look that indicated that he wasn’t to volunteer to take her place but it went right over his pretty boyfriend’s head.

He tries to talk to Hao Mei over dinner at home and gets a dark glower for his trouble. “I’m a man, too. I can take care of myself.”

“I know.” KO tries to say it carefully but it looks like Hao Mei is worked up about something. 

“I’m not even good at being a wife,” he grumbles into the dinner KO enjoys making for him. 

“I don’t care about that,” KO says. “Hao Mei--”

“I like being friends with Wei Wei but that doesn’t mean I’m a girl. There is nothing wrong with being a girl but I am a man. I can take care of myself.” Then he settles into angrily munching on dinner and KO refrains from telling him how adorable he is in this moment.

“Do you want us to stop teasing you about that?”

Hao Mei sighs and puts down his chopsticks. “What happens to Wei Wei when she’s in public is never her fault. I am enough of a deterrent most of the time. Her strength puts everyone to shame but she shouldn’t have to deal with that shit. And when you tease us about being the office wives, it feels like you and Xiao Nai agree with the shitheads. That’s why we didn’t tell you. We don’t have to fall into those roles, KO. I don’t have to be the wife and you don’t have to be the husband. We can just be boyfriends and take care of each other.”

KO actually smiles. “I like that. I’ll try not to be the husband at work so much then.”

Young-Do sits uncomfortably in his mother’s café and feels like a coward. He’s chased and met all of Rachel’s requirements these last two years. She gets back in time to watch him be named president.

Everyone expects them to announce their engagement within the month. His stomach has dreaded it ever since he agreed to her caveat.

All he had to do was fucking apologize and he just couldn’t. He knew it was going to bite him in the ass, far more than it already had, and he still couldn’t apologize.

But it didn’t change how much he loved her. It didn’t change how much he missed her. And it didn’t change how much he regretted...

Anything but that, Rachel. I’ll do anything but apologize.

You’re willing to go into our marriage with this hanging over it?

Yes.

Fine. Here are my terms. If you want me, this is the only way you get me.

He was more like his father than he wanted to admit and he couldn’t tell her he loved her because of the darkness twisting inside her. If he did, if he apologized, he would lose her all over again.

Young-Do closes his eyes when his phone vibrates from a text. It’s Rachel.

I’ve moved my flight up, boyfriend. You better pick me up at the airport. I can’t wait to see you.

This is a major spoiler.

“I trust you.”

Young-Do has no fucking idea what to do with her trust. Not after last night. He never expected Eun-Sang to call him. They sat in the small noodle shop, with the writing on the wall echoing his past, and once more he is confronted with the truth.

Eun-Sang always runs away. He doesn’t know how to help her.

“Rachel has more connections than I do. She gets back in two weeks. You should wait.”

“I have to leave before she gets back. He’s going to blame her. It’s safer if she isn’t here.” Eun-Sang stared at the table and he remembers the last time they sat in this exact same place. “Young-Do, please. She’s already sacrificed so much for me. I can’t ask her for help again. Not after...”

He wished he knew exactly what happened between her and Rachel but there is too much history for either woman to clear things up for him. So he places the credit card on the table.

“There is no limit. It has your new name on it. The only two people who know that card exists are me and my security chief and he is the only one with the access to track it. You have my word I won’t look at the purchases or locations attached to them. You can really disappear again.”

Eun-Sang picked up the card and stood. She went to his side of the tiny table and took his hand. “I trust you.” It hurts the second time, especially when she bent down and kissed him. “I’m sorry about last night. I shouldn’t have done that.”

Then she was gone. He still has no fucking idea what he’s supposed to do with all of this. He knew she also got Lee Hyo-Shin’s help this time.

Cha Eun-Sang’s car accident makes national news. It happens a week after Rachel returns from her internship in LA.

Myungsol | Pretty soulmates | 22 | thanks!

Myung-Soo can tell that Ye-Sol is nervous about meeting his parents. Her fingers keep curling in the sleeves of her very stylish pantsuit over dinner. He thinks his mother is being particularly nice during the conversation but he knows he biased.

He catches his father’s eye right before he takes a turn with Ye-Sol’s legal and political knowledge. Father winks at him. In a way, he supposes, Myung-Soo has brought home the perfect girl.

As the night progresses, Mother becomes more and more open to Ye-Sol in ways that only Myung-Soo recognizes. They are about the leave the dinner when Mother takes Ye-Sol’s hand and smiles at her.

“I know you must be worried about your mother and what she means for your future. Chang-Yi is a close personal friend of mine. You will find no judgement here.” Then she smiles at Myung-Soo. “I approve.”

“Thank you, Omeonim,” Ye-Sol bows and she’s shaking as Myung-Soo walks her out to her car.

“It wasn’t that bad,” he says and she gives him a look before she maneuvers herself into his arms and wraps her arms around his waist. Until this moment, he thought his hope was mostly one-sided.

“We could have a chance.”

The promotion comes as something of a surprise. Yoo-Rae expected to be writing grunt articles forever, especially with her miscalculation and getting hurt by fans. She blinks stupidly at her Cap after she explains what the job would entail.

“A Team Leader?”

“Your former Cap recommended you highly for this position. You would decide the web content and what articles to follow up on. You would have your own team and...and I think this would physically protect you.” She pauses and smiles gently enough to make Yoo-Rae that she might actually like her. “You are very good at this, Yoo-Rae. Being on camera may be flashy but--”

“I don’t enjoy being on camera. Okay. I’ll take it.” 

Everything moves so fast and she’s excited to take this next step in her career. She ends up at a barbecue place with In-Ha, Ha-Myung, and...Not!Cap to celebrate her promotion. She catches her old Cap watching her as she explains what her plans are for the celebrity portion of the station website. She feels better than she has in years and...

Yoo-Rae presses her lips together and swallows when In-Ha and Ha-Myung leave early and Hwang Gyo-Dong takes care of the bill. “We’re almost colleagues,” she says when he offers to call her a cab. He actually smiles and it seems soft to her. “I mean, you still make a ton more money than I do, but after Team Leader is Cap. It’s years away but--”

“You aren’t my subordinate anymore.” He briefly touches her hand. “You can date between departments. It isn’t years away, Yoon Yoo-Rae.”

“Not years,” she agrees. “I want to try but now feels like the worst time.”

“It is. Team Leader of that section of the website is going to be overwhelming. I’m here, if you need advice.”

She likes that. “Can you wait for me? Not years. Maybe months.”

He nods and finishes his drink. “I can wait months.”

“You could talk about it, you know?”

Jia-Le looks up at Man-Man with a tight smile as she tries to focus on her coffee. “There isn’t anything to talk about. He obviously didn’t feel the same way I did. He left about an hour later.”

She pretends she hasn’t been checking her phone for an explanation. Man-Man wrinkles her nose and smacks her shoulder. “That is not what his scent on you is saying and you know it. What does your wolf think?”

Whatever it was that took him from us early, it is important. He didn’t want to leave. He had to leave.

“My wolf is besotted. She’s not thinking straight.” Her phone vibrates and she begrudgingly pulls it out of her pocket. She has two texts. One from work demanding she come in immediately and one from Zhen-Yu.

She’s also missed several calls from him. Please call me. I want you to hear this from me.

Jia-Le frowns just as she gets a call from Si-Ming. She answers quietly because he’s not really the man she wants to talk to. “I need your insight into a murder investigation. You know some of the players.”

“Who?” Her stomach bottoms out just as the scent of blood hits her nose. She turns around to see Zhen-Yu coming into the coffee cafe. Man-Man doesn’t smell happy at his scent either. It is weird and confusing.

“Your old judo mentor has been killed. I suspect his wife but...she’s already got a lawyer.”

“Ke Zhen-Yu?” As she says it, the man in front of her pales and holds up his hands. “Why would he be her lawyer?”

“They were childhood sweethearts.” Jia-Le drops her phone and Zhen-Yu catches it. His emotions are everywhere and while she can smell them, she doesn’t know what they mean. He cancels her call and sets her phone down.

“Jia-Le, I can explain.”

Chan-Young’s words startle her during the aftermath of their coupling. He is the one curled up behind her, his arms around her, his heart beating against her back, and she feels unmade, all things considered.

Bo-Na takes his hand and intertwines their fingers. “I’ve been putting you off for nearly ten years.” She rolls over and meets his eyes because he deserves to see her wolf for a few seconds. His wolf appears in response. “I won’t let you be cold anymore. That’s what this means.”

Chan-Young kisses her and she wraps her arms around his neck and pulls him over her. He repeats, as if it will be clearer the second time, “You keep me warm.”

“Yes, I admit it, you were right.”

The king laughs at him as he retreats into the back of Do-Hyun’s mind. It had not been easy to decide what to do about Dan-Bi’s desires, simply because the king would not shut up.

But he laid next to Dan-Bi after the intimate encounter and wondered how something he’d been so afraid of, actually made him feel more secure in his relationship to her. It felt like a special moment between the three of them and that was just weird.

“What are you feeling?” Dan-Bi sounds nervous as she lays her head against his shoulder.

Like a king.

“It isn’t important.” He kisses the top of her head. “How are you?”

There is a very similar hesitation. “I’m laughing. I thought it would solve something. It didn’t but…it didn’t create more problems either.”

Do-Hyun takes her hand and kisses the center of her palm. “I agree.”
