Common Picture-winged Fly (Delphinia picta), in my backyard last week. These flies develop as larvae in decaying plant matter. The adults perform dances on leaves, paddling their wings through the air to attract a mate. There are two generations of these flies in a year, one from May to July and one that spends the winter as larvae. .
