Happy Places #6
"Dad where are you right now?" Chuck responds with an "At home." Nope he is not at home. How do we know this? We track his cell phone. Yep, we are those people. Unbeknownst to dad, he is tracked every time he leaves the house, IF he has his cell phone with him. Actually Chuck is sitting in his car at the Wendy's drive-thru. He is probably shuffling through all his fast food coupons. The tracking of my dad through his cell phone began six months ago and has also become a 'Cat and Mouse' game. We will randomly call him when the car is stopped and ask him 'where are you?' which Chuck rarely answers honestly. He doesn't like us being in his business. However, predictability is why it is pretty easy to track Free Range Chuck
On any given day, Dad will be at one of his happy places: Menards, the bank, Walmart, Costco for gas or the bigger than your head sized pumpkin pie, or any fast food restaurant, He doesn't go many places; of the places he does travel, all are within a 5 mile square radius of his home. Once a major traveller like his father, no place was too far to drive.
My grandfather was a life-long traveller. He loved to travel all over the United States in various modes of transportation. He encouraged his boys to do the same and go on excursions via motorcycle, car or train with him. The trip to Daytona (a very long trip in 1961 from our home state) was a father-son road trip in Chuck's new VW Beetle. I think the German car choice interesting considering WW2 was only 15 years previously, but I do not have any more information on why that make of car was chosen. And, dad no longer remembers.
I showed this picture of a 'young' Chuck to my dad, and he could not remember where or why. At first he didn't even recognize himself. After flipping the picture over, my grandfather's handwriting clearly states "Chuck at Daytona 1961.” The process of handling the photo with his fingers, and the flipping back and forth from front to back seemed to jog something in his memory, finally. Thank goodness for my grandfather who tried to chronicle life as much as he could in pictures. This was proof. As the Alzheimer's Disease progresses, Dad remembers less and less. If it wasn't for picture proof, we wouldn't know much about his younger years. It was weird, but as dad kept looking at the photo and touching it with the tip of his index finger suddenly the story bubbled up. Grandpa loved Florida and thought it would be a fun father-son excursion before Chuck left for college.
For my dad, the car equals freedom, like it does for most of us. As my dad's next birthday nears, my brother and I are faced with the cruel task of witnessing my dad's driver's license being taken away. Dad's driver's license renewal will require him to take a written and cognitive test, as well as an actual road test. We know he will not pass the written or cognitive, which means he will not even get to the road test. We are mentally preparing ourselves for this event; it will be traumatic and heartbreaking. As much as we try to reason with our father at this stage of the Alzheimer's, we fail. He will look at us as if we are punishing him.
As he loses more freedom, we worry how Dad will adjust. But we are assured by well-meaning people who either have no clue nor are going through it, Chuck will be fine. He can call an Uber, a taxi or a Senior Service. Sure, easy. But we know our dad, and he will not take any of these options. As this is uncharted territory for my brother and I, If there are people out there with 'real-life' solutions, please let us know.

People can still live well with dementia. Although there is no cure for dementia, scientists and researchers are working hard to find one. A Dementia Friend learns a little bit more about what it's like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action.
