Hi,
this is a friendly and just a heads-up, because I've seen ALOT of people (literally most people who use it) misuse that term.
Parasocial means when you have a one-sided relationship with someone AND think that they somehow are aware of you and share your feelings.
One-sided relationships is just admiration or a crush or a rolemodel or whatever.
Parasocial relationships are like a diagnosable mental health issue (like stalkers usually have parasocial relationships with their victims).
hey i'm pretty sure that's not what it means actually. when i got this ask i did think maybe you were right so i went and looked up a bunch of stuff and absolutely everywhere it is used with the meaning i used it, including the very first instance where it was used.
i think the reason you're saying this is that in the recent years we've mostly talked about parasociality in a negative context, in terms of the dangers it poses, so now when people have it they feel guilty about it.
but by itself parasocial relationships are a neutral phenomenon that pretty much everyone experiences. it has been a thing for decades, if not hundreds of years, and has just become way more intense and common. it's a part of human psychology. this is important to acknowledge: it can affect everyone. it can affect you. it absolutely affects me. we gain nothing for pretending it only affects actively delusional people, because then we risk missing the ways it harms everyone else. and you are flattening a lot of nuance by saying it's just "admiration or a crush or whatever." you can have admiration or a crush on someone you actually know. it says nothing about the type of relationship that it is.
the term is necessary to discuss what i'm discussing. the reason i made the poll is because the definition most used for demisexuality says "attraction only after strong bond", and most people take that to mean "attraction only to those you have a social relationship with, never, like, celebrities."
but my lived experience (and apparently the experience of a fair portion of demisexuals, looking at the poll so far) says actually the strong bond can absolutely be formed with someone you've never even met or spoken to! because what's important here isn't that you get to know someone, it's that you feel like you're getting to know someone. it's a relationship, just parasocial instead of social. it still fits into a demisexual pattern of attraction.
