Steve's Look of RealizationTM
Grey Ace/Demisexual Steve with Billy who is coming on HARD with the flirts and seduction, but Steve is just ????
Lip licking, tongue wagging, skin exposed, little flirtatious touches and words - and Steve’s not stupid. He knows what Billy is doing, but he’s just not sharing in the gaga eyes that the girls have while watching Billy in the parking lot, or when he saunters into Scoops Ahoy.
Until Billy and Max come into the ice cream parlor and order the same thing. Steve didn’t expect them to have the same taste, but it’s easier to make two of the same thing, so whatever.
Then Billy pokes Max’s chest, causing her to look down and get flicked on the nose for it. Her surprise makes her drop her ice cream. Billy scoffs, “Every time,” and hands her his cone.
Then he glances at Steve, only to pause as he watches Steve’s temperature visibly skyrocket on his face and throat. Steve can only mumble, “I gotta go,” before he sits in the freezer for twenty minutes.
Eventually Robin comes in and asked, “Are you pissed at him or pissed off that you like him?”
Steve can only grumble, “I don’t know yet.”
Steve looks so nervous here, it's hilarious! 😂

I have a question for you that I'd like to ask many fanfiction authors. I would feel a bit silly sending it to all of them which I know that answer questions but if you answer it - and agree with it - I'd be happy to see some discussion! I chose you because you're my favorite author and always answer things so nicely :) So here it goes: Whats the difference between really deep friendship and love to you? Especially when it comes the canon stucky friendship vs. fanfiction I think about it a lot.
Speaking as an asexual biromantic: Dude, your guess is as good as mine.
I mean, I assume that when you contrast “really deep friendship” and “love” what you mean is to contrast “intense platonic love” and “romantic-but-maybe-non-sexual love” (allosexual people whose sexual and romantic orientations line up seem to find that having/wanting sex is the distinction, most of the time, but presumably if that applied you would know) because of course a really deep friendship = love, broadly speaking. But I am still pants at teasing out any meaningful distinction between those two things in my own experience.
Uh, and less flippantly, I have a langushing WIP that actually lays out my theory on this in terms of how the relationships work, which I should really post sometime and/or write more of, but here’s the relevant bit:
Sleep never came in more than little snatches. Steve woke upevery time Bucky moved--and every time he moved himself and Bucky moved toaccommodate him--and when they were both managing to be still he would open hiseyes and find himself marveling at the whole idea of being in bedwith Bucky, because Bucky was his to go to bed with now.
Steve had had sex before enough times to know his way aroundit, but he'd never slept through the night--or not slept through the night, asit was turning out--with anyone he had sex with. He'd never had the chance togo to bed with someone he loved that way. For all the times he'd seen Bucky sleep,or slept close to him, for all the ways he and Bucky had been closer than Stevehad ever been with anyone else, there had always been a little separatenessbetween them.
That, Steve realized, was what just friends meant. Not that there had ever been anything small about that love; he wouldhave given his life for Bucky any time since he was ten years old and thoughtit a fair trade.
But there had been a boundary they didn't cross, an intimacythey didn't deliberately intrude on. Bucky was asking to knock down that lastbarrier between them, starting with kissing and sleeping in the same bed withthe understanding of touch between them, and ending... who knew where.
The two shall become one flesh. But itwasn't just about the way bodies joined in sex. It was about being a unit, likeBucky had said. About having nothing left to separate them.
Steve said a silent inarticulate prayer of gratitude--forBucky, for getting to know this about Bucky, getting to try this with Bucky. He suddenly couldn't imagine daring this withanyone else--and wasn't that what Bucky had said? Steve was the only one hecould imagine it with? Bucky had been talking about sex, but Steve thought thiswas a part of it too.
okay so when i said i don’t have any headcanons, i was lying. steve is demisexual and no one can tell me different.
