Police fire tear gas at anti-migrant 'hotspot' protest
Greek riot police fired tear gas on Sunday at demonstrators protesting against the development of a centre to house migrants on the tourist island of Kos, officials said. Riot police fired tear gas to disperse several dozen protesters who tried to break in to the construction site about 10 kilometres (six miles) from the port of Kos, the island's deputy mayor David Gerasklis told AFP, confirming media reports. "The number of demonstrators Sunday was bigger than on Wednesday, about 2,000 people," said Gerasklis. http://dlvr.it/KVxcF0 Source: Yahoo News
South Korea vows zero tolerance ahead of fresh anti-govt rally
South Korea's justice minister issued a fresh warning on Friday of zero tolerance towards violence during street protests, ahead of a planned anti-government demonstration in Seoul next week. Kim had issued a similar warning before a huge anti-government rally in Seoul on November 14 that drew around 60,000 people and saw numerous clashes between protestors and police who used pepper spray and water cannon to maintain order. Activists have called for a similar demonstration on December 5. http://dlvr.it/CrrzWP
Congo opposition calls off protest
Congo's opposition has said it will obey a ban on public demonstrations after deadly street violence, cancelling a Friday protest against a referendum that could allow the president to extend his three decades in office. The country has been rocked by protests ahead of the planned referendum on Sunday to amend the constitution to allow long-ruling President Denis Sassou Nguesso to run for another term in 2016. "We decided to cancel our meeting tomorrow because the Brazzaville prefecture told us that all gatherings were banned on Friday in the public square," opposition leader Mpouele Paul-Marie told AFP Thursday. http://dlvr.it/CX7hG2

16 hurt as clashes erupt in Beirut trash protest
At least 16 people were injured on Saturday when clashes erupted in central Beirut between Lebanese security forces and demonstrators calling for a solution to weeks of uncollected rubbish. Thousands of protesters rallied to protest against the government's inability to clean up the capital and other parts of Lebanon where the streets are overflowing with rubbish. Organised by the "You Stink" campaign, the demonstrators gathered in Riad al-Solh Square near the parliament building and chanted slogans against the government and political leaders. http://dlvr.it/BxDtyh
Protests show weakness of Brazil's embattled left
Brazil's embattled left staged protests in dozens of cities Thursday, but the low turnout was in sharp contrast with last weekend's mass demonstrations against leftist President Dilma Rousseff. Four days after nearly a million people marched to call for Rousseff's impeachment, a series of leftwing gatherings were unlikely to give the Brazilian president, whose popularity ratings are in single digits, much of a lift. The president's Workers' Party appealed for Brazilians to come out "in defense of democracy," while other leftwing groups like the Homeless Workers said they were demonstrating against Rousseff's policies -- even if they opposed calls for her ouster. http://dlvr.it/Bvyxy5
